In 2024, 800,000 tons of sand were added along Illinois Beach, helping restore areas affected by erosion and breathe new life into the shoreline. It was a reminder of what makes this place special, and we wanted the hotel to feel just as connected to the lake and landscape that surround it.

That vision inspired the transformation of Illinois Beach Hotel into The Dunes Hotel. Guestrooms have been refreshed, public spaces have new flooring, and the lobby and restaurant feature updated furnishings and custom finishes. A new front desk and arrival experience welcome guests from the moment they walk in. Throughout the hotel, the design draws from its surroundings, with lake blues, sandy neutrals, natural textures and details inspired by the dunes and native grasses just outside.

The transformation also brings a new way to enjoy the lakeshore with Breakwater Bistro, our new lakeside restaurant. With European-inspired bistro seating, an updated dining room and panoramic views of Lake Michigan, it’s a place to settle in, share a meal and take in the view.
