Leaving city life behind and heading to the countryside, your children will have many exciting experiences.

They will not only enjoy the peaceful surroundings but also participate in many outdoor activities: fishing, picking fruit, cooking with their parents, cycling on uncrowded streets, and even playing with local children.

If staying with a local family, children can even go into the kitchen and interact with the grandmother there 😂, and assist the gardeners, doing all sorts of tasks.🤣🤣

💥 The Best Southern Vietnam Itinerary: From Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta

Southern Vietnam offers an incredible blend of vibrant urban energy, serene river culture, and tropical island gateways. If you are planning your route, here is a flexible, highly rewarding itinerary starting from Ho Chi Minh City.

👉1. Kick Off in Ho Chi Minh City (1–2 Days)
Highlights: Discover historic landmarks with a classic City Tour, explore the underground network of the Cu Chi Tunnels, or shop for local artisan goods and street food around the city center.

🔥2. Journey Down to the Mekong Delta: Can Tho & Beyond
✅The Route: Head southwest from Ho Chi Minh City toward Can Tho, the cultural heartbeat of the delta. Break up the drive with a scenic day stop in Ben Tre to explore lush coconut groves before checking in for the night in Can Tho.
✅Authentic Can Tho Countryside: Venture beyond the typical tourist trails by joining community-led activities with local families. Explore tranquil rural canals on small sampans, visit the vibrant early-morning floating markets, and immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity of Lung Ngoc Hoang Nature Reserve.
✅Day Trips from Can Tho: Use Can Tho as your hub to take easy day excursions to the lotus fields of D**g Thap or the sacred mountains and floating villages of An Giang.

⭐️3. Next Stops & Island Gateways from Can Tho
Island Getaways: Catch a high-speed ferry or a direct flight from Can Tho to tropical paradises like Phu Quoc or Con Dao.
Domestic Connections: Can Tho International Airport offers convenient direct flights to northern and central hubs like Da Nang and Hanoi.

Top 8 Fun Facts About the Mekong Delta (That Travel Guides Won’t Tell You!)

Planning your trip to Vietnam? Before booking a generic tour bus, here are 8 bizarre, beautiful secrets about the Mekong Delta that will completely change your perspective:

🌾 Slow Travel Tip: Don’t just look at the Mekong Delta through a bus window—get on the water and live inside its rhythm.

👇 Which of these 8 facts surprised you the most? Tell us below!

📍 1. The “60-Kilometer Magic Distance”: Ever wondered why major provincial cities in the Delta (Chau Doc, Long Xuyen, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau) are almost perfectly separated by ~60 km? Historically, locals traveled by rowboats using tidal currents. One full tide change lasts about 6 hours—exactly enough time for a boat to cover 60 km!

🎋 2. The Secret Code on the Bamboo Display Pole (Cây Bẹo): Vendors at floating markets don’t yell to advertise; they hang samples of their goods high up on a tall bamboo display pole (Cây Bẹo). But there are two hilarious local rules: If they hang coconut leaves, it means they are selling the entire boat! And if you see shirts or towels hanging, don’t try to buy them—that’s just the family’s daily laundry drying in the sun!

🐟 3. You Don’t Need Money to Get a Full Meal: Long before “Farm-to-Table” became a luxury Western travel trend, it was just daily life here! Thanks to rich alluvial soil and endless waterways, if locals are hungry, they simply pick fresh veggies from the garden and catch wild fish from the backyard pond 30 minutes before dinner—zero cost!

🚢 4. Multi-Million Dollar Floating Mansions: Forget luxury yachts! The giant metal barges (Xà Lan) cruising the rivers can cost up to $200,000–$400,000 USD (5–10 billion VND). They function as floating mansions, complete with luxury living rooms, air-conditioned bedrooms, guard dogs, and even motorbikes parked on top!

🛶 5. Floating “Mobile” Convenience Stores with Melodic Street Cries: In deep rural canals where there are no land roads, small wooden motorboats function as mobile grocery shops. Vendors drift along the peaceful water, calling out traditio

💥Best Time to Visit the Mekong Delta: Weather, Seasons & Local Festivals💥

If you are looking for the most pleasant weather to explore the Mekong Delta, October through February is the golden season. The rainy season winds down, leaving behind clear skies, gentle breezes, and comfortable temperatures. While daytime temperatures usually stay between 26°C and 33°C, early mornings and evenings can dip to a refreshing 19°C–22°C.

👉Visiting between December and January is especially magical as the region gears up for the Lunar New Year (Tet). The canals come alive with flower boats, local markets buzz with festive energy, and traditional villages prepare signature holiday treats.
Mekong Delta Weather Throughout the Rest of the Year

👉April to July (The Summer Fruit Harvest): Summer brings sunshine and lush, bountiful orchards. This is the peak harvest season for iconic tropical fruits like durian, rambutan, mangosteen, and sweet mango. Travelers from across Vietnam and around the world flock to the delta to pick and taste fresh fruits directly from local gardens.

👉August to October (The Floating Water Season): While occasional tropical showers occur during this period, rains are typically brief afternoon downpours rather than all-day storms. The delta enjoys far gentler weather compared to the stormy wet seasons in Central or Northern Vietnam. This time also marks the famous floating water season (mùa nước nổi), bringing nutrient-rich waters, blooming water lilies, and thriving bird sanctuaries.
