Did you know that the charming village of Bathurst has a rich history dating back to the early 1820s?
Let's take a journey through time and uncover the fascinating story of our iconic Historic Pig and Whistle Inn.
Established by Thomas Hartley, one of the brave settlers who ventured from England to the unknown shores of the Eastern Cape, this inn played a vital role in the frontier town's early days. It served as a hub for travellers, offering accommodation, refreshments, and a warm welcome. 🛖🍺
Despite its humble beginnings, the inn quickly gained recognition and became the preferred choice for esteemed guests, including Governor Lord Charles Somerset and Sir Benjamin D'Urban. It was a place where stories were shared, friendships were forged, and memories were made. 🍻🤝
After the death of Thomas Hartley and under the stewardship of his wife, Sarah Hartley, the inn flourished as a haven of hospitality, attracting dignitaries, government officials, and explorers. It even caught the eye of renowned artist Thomas Baines, who immortalised its beauty on canvas in 1849. 🎨
Over the years, the inn transitioned and embraced its current name, the Historic Pig and Whistle Inn, inspired by the soldiers from the Royal Air Force who named it after their beloved pub back home. 🐷🍻
Today, we invite you to step into this living piece of history and indulge in the warm hospitality that has endured for centuries.
