Some people become part of a place in a way that can’t be separated from it.

Our barge captain, Kosie, is one of those people. A living legend around here, known for his stories, his steady hand on the water, and his deep love for the Buffeljagsdam. To the children, though, he’ll always be Oom Shanti, a name spoken with affection and a smile.

We’re grateful for the care, character, and quiet humour he brings to life on the water at Umshanti.

Winter holds its own kind of magic at Umshanti.

Open fires become the heart of the evening, drawing everyone a little closer. The kolkol hot tub at our Ougat family cottage steams gently in the cold air, a place to linger as the stars come out. Indoors, warm blankets and quiet nights make it easy to slow down and stay awhile.

It’s a season for comfort, warmth, and simple pleasures, experienced at an easier pace.

There is a quiet sense of wonder that comes with sunset on the Buffeljagsdam.

There’s something special about being out on the water as the day begins to slow.

Our canoe rentals offer a quiet way to experience the Buffeljagsdam at sunset, when the light softens, the water turns glassy, and everything feels momentarily still. Birds settle in for the evening, the sky shifts colour, and the world seems to exhale.

It’s not about going anywhere fast. It’s about drifting, noticing, and being present in a place that asks very little of you.
