🌱 Winter Garden Update | Lulama Futshane – Tribe of Asher

Our winter garden is looking absolutely beautiful! 🥬💚

The cabbages are reaching gorgeous sizes, the beetroot is looking amazing, and the spring onions, onions, peas and spinach are all waking up beautifully from their winter sleep.

We’re very excited — harvesting starts next week! 🥕🧅🥬

And our compost heaps have been turned and are looking fantastic after their winter rest. We’ve produced a good amount of beautiful compost, which will now be worked back into the garden to nourish and prepare the soil for our summer crops.

Good soil. Good food. Good people. 🌱❤️

🧄 Growing Garlic? Don’t Lose Faith in the Final Months!

One of the most important things to know about growing garlic is that the magic happens late in the season! 🌱

For much of its growing cycle, garlic is busy developing roots and leaves and storing energy. It’s only during the final months that the plant really starts putting that energy into bulb and clove development.

So if your garlic looks small underground, don’t give up! Keep those leaves healthy, keep moisture consistent, ensure good nutrition and let the plant do its work. 🌿

Those final weeks can make a huge difference to the size of your bulbs.

🧄 Be patient. Trust the process. The garlic is growing where you can’t see it!

RHOOM is creating a collection of landscape art pieces that tell the story of the journey back to Burgersdorp. Each outdoor structure will reflect the influences, experiences, and lessons gathered through years of travel — a collection of moments, memories, challenges, and growth.

The vision is to create spaces that inspire visitors to pause, reflect, and embrace their own journey; to see life as something built layer by layer. These pieces will represent blessings, joy, burdens, struggles, resilience, and the beauty found in overcoming.

This is the first of many creations to come — the beginning of a living story shaped by passion, purpose, and gratitude.

People often believe the harsh climate, frost, and freezing temperatures make it impossible to grow anything this time of year — but winter has its own magic. With the right timing, understanding ground temperatures, and choosing the right crops, winter gardening can be incredibly rewarding.

I absolutely love growing in winter, and of course my personal favourite is garlic. There is something special about planting now and knowing what lies beneath the soil is quietly preparing for the seasons ahead.

But garlic is not alone — we have planted cabbage, beetroot, peas, spring onions, spinach, onions, and salad. These vegetables don’t just survive the cold… they thrive in it.

We collect leaves from around half the town to create a natural blanket for our soil. It’s about working with nature, not against it — meeting her halfway and giving the garden the best chance to flourish.

Winter gardening in the Karoo is not a limitation. It’s an opportunity. 🌿
