South Africa is blessed with a vast region known as the Karoo, but did you know how many subdivisions there are?

Moordenaars Karoo (North of Laingsburg)
Koup (Merweville area)
Hardemans Karoo (North of Fraserburg)
Little Karoo (West of Oudtshoorn)
Upper Karoo North of Carnarvon)
Great Karoo (West of Aberdeen)
False Karoo (Around the Van der Kloof Dam)
Camdeboo (East of Graaff-Reinet)

In total these acccount for roughly 400,000 sq. km. - which is about 40% of the total land mass of South Africa.

Most people would not have heard of Koup. The name "Koup" comes from a Khoi term meaning "caul" (the lacy fat surrounding an animal's internal organs).

Early indigenous inhabitants named the region.They thought the landscape looked like a sheep's liver covered in fat and blood vessels.

Golden patches of dry veld grass mixed with dark brown or grey soil created this visual pattern.

This resemblance becomes very clear at the start of winter when the vegetation dries out.
