It's Spring Time in South Africa and so important to note: Dog poo on beaches poses a massive threat to public health and marine environments, far beyond just being an unpleasant sight or a messy step. Many pet owners mistakenly believe that the tide naturally cleanses the sand, but leaving dog waste behind introduces billions of toxic microorganisms into the ecosystem.

The Hidden Dangers of Dog Waste:
• Water Contamination: A single gram of dog faeces contains roughly 23 million faecal coliform bacteria. Just one instance of dog waste can release enough E. coli to contaminate an Olympic-sized swimming pool or a water area as large as a tennis court. High bacteria spikes frequently lead local councils to issue swimming bans or strip beaches of their Blue Flag status.
• Severe Public Health Risks: Dog faeces contain severe pathogens like Salmonella, Giardia, and E. coli, alongside parasites such as hookworms and roundworms. Hookworm larvae can live in the sand and burrow through the bare skin of unsuspecting beachgoers. Exposure can cause severe illnesses, particularly in children, including diarrhea, infections, and even blindness.
• Algal Blooms: Dog waste is highly concentrated in nitrogen and phosphorus. When washed into the ocean, these nutrients stimulate rapid algae growth, which depletes oxygen levels in the water, suffocating fish and harming marine biodiversity.
• Persistent Parasites: Even after the tide washes the visible waste away, microscopic bacteria and viruses (like Parvovirus, which can survive in the environment for up to 6 months) remain trapped in the wet sand.

Best Practices for Responsible Dog Owners:

To protect beachgoers, local wildlife, and water safety, dog owners should practice proactive waste management:
• Pre-Walk Routine: Walk your dog around the parking lot, grassy areas, or trails before heading onto the sand. Dogs often relieve themselves immediately upon arriving due to excitement.
• Bag and Bin It: Always carry dedicated bags and a scoop. Pick up the waste immediately, tie the bag securely, and dispose of it in a public waste bin. Remember that you can use any general trash bin; it does not have to be a specific dog waste bin.
• Never Bury Waste: Do not cover waste with sand or hide it under stones. It does not decompose cleanly and remains a hazard for anyone digging in the sand.
• Avoid Storm Drains: Never discard waste bags into or near storm drains. Storm drains act as direct conduits, flushing untreated raw sewage straight into rivers and the sea.
• Respect Local Laws: Adhere strictly to seasonal bans, designated dog-free zones, and leash requirements

Thank you to all pet owners that care and protect. Enjoy your pets, and awesome beach walks.

The best months of the year to watch whales along Clarence Drive in Gordon's Bay to Hermanus and Gansbaai, along the Whale Coast Route, are September and October.

During this peak period, migratory Southern Right whales arrive in the highest concentrations across False Bay and the Whale Coast Route to mate, calve, and nurse their young close to the shore.

While the broader whale-watching season spans from June to November, September and October offer the most frequent and spectacular displays of breaching, tail sailing, and spyhopping.

📌 Prime Viewing Details

The Window: June to November (Overall Season), September to October (Absolute Peak).

Whale Species: Southern Right whales are the most common, though Humpback and resident Bryde's whales are also frequently spotted.

Top Spots on Clarence Drive: Pull into the designated gravel lay-bys cut into the mountainside. The Whale Lookout Point just outside Gordon's Bay is an elevated favorite equipped with panoramic views, so too Hermanus boardwalk and Walker Bay.

Bonus Sightings: Large superpods of common dolphins are regularly seen moving rapidly through the bay.

Plan your next viewing as soon as possible and enjoy the times.
