Welcome to Sugar Bay Camp, St Dominics!

We’re delighted to welcome the Grade 4–7 learners and their teachers for a school camp in Zinkwazi Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

There’s plenty to look forward to this week, with beach activities, outdoor adventures and a little friendly competition during Minute to Win It. It’s a chance to spend time together beyond the classroom, try something new and cheer each other on.

Thank you to the teachers and families for trusting us with your children’s camp experience.

A warm Sugar Bay Camp welcome to Jabulile Primary School!

We’re so pleased to have your Grade 6 and 7 learners and teachers joining us in Zinkwazi Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

Their school camp programme brings together beach activities and team challenges, with time to have fun as classmates and opportunities to practise leadership. We’re looking forward to seeing them get involved, support one another and discover which activities they enjoy most.

Thank you to the Jabulile teachers and families for making this trip possible. We’re glad you’re here!

Follow our stories for a look at their time at camp.

For St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls, Kloof, this was their first school camp at Sugar Bay, and Dr Michelle Shepherdson summed up the experience beautifully.

As with any school tour, there are always questions around safety, supervision and how learners will cope away from home. Dr Shepherdson says the safeguarding measures at Sugar Bay Camp gave her the confidence to relax, enjoy the programme with the Grade 8 girls and even join them on the water slides.

Beyond the activities, she saw the girls building resilience, communication skills and confidence without necessarily realising they were learning. They stepped outside their comfort zones, encouraged one another and formed strong connections with the Sugar Bay counselors who stayed with them throughout camp.

Her words at the end meant a great deal to us: “We could not have chosen a better place for our camp. And we will be back.”

Thank you to Dr Michelle Shepherdson, the staff and the Grade 8 girls from St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls, Kloof for trusting Sugar Bay with your first camp here. It was a pleasure welcoming you to Zinkwazi Beach on the KZN North Coast, and we hope this is the first of many school camps together.

The St Mary’s DSG Kloof Grade 8s have been making the most of the coast at Sugar Bay Camp in Zinkwazi Beach.

Wednesday afternoon included sea swimming, bodyboarding, surfing, SUP, kayaking, beach exploring, bocce, beach creations and a marine biology session.

Thursday morning they were back at the beach with more swimming, surfing, paddling and bodyboarding, plus shell collecting, rock exploring, sand sculptures and other beach activities.

For schools looking for a Grade 8 camp on the KZN North Coast, this is the kind of hands-on outdoor programme Sugar Bay offers.

What does a school camp at Sugar Bay look like for Assumption Convent School’s Grades 6–11? A lot of choice, and very little sitting around.

Wednesday afternoon included pool swimming, Jacobs Ladder, tie-dye, paintball, skating, obstacle activities, sun catchers and field games.

Thursday morning stepped things up with high ropes, more pool time, tie-dye, beach bread, dream catchers and a Zinkwazi tour around our corner of the KZN North Coast.

That mix of adventure, creativity and outdoor time is exactly what school groups come to Sugar Bay Camp in Zinkwazi Beach for.

For mom Olwethu Leshabane, the biggest change she has seen after sending her three boys to Sugar Bay Camp is confidence.

Confidence to meet new people, make friends, walk into unfamiliar spaces and become a little more independent each time they come to camp. And because every child is different, that progress has looked different for each of her boys too.

Then there is the parent side of it: knowing they are safe, looked after, busy, off their devices and spending their school holidays actually playing and socialising. Plus, as Olwethu puts it, a well-earned “fridge break” at home.

Her boys have now made Sugar Bay part of their school holidays, travelling to our children’s holiday camp in Zinkwazi Beach on the KZN North Coast and spending time with children from around South Africa.

For a parent, the stories they come home with are great. The confidence they come home with matters even more.

Wednesday morning brought another big choice of activities including BMX, indoor climbing, beading, field games, table tennis, dance, tote bag painting, indoor hockey and drama.

Two sessions, loads of choice and a good taste of what a Grade 8 school camp in Zinkwazi Beach on the KZN North Coast is all about.
