This 4* graded, secured upmarket, tastefully decorated and unique finishing, self catering lodge is situated in the malaria-free central region of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, 40 km north of Sefako Makgatho (Zambesi) intersection, on the N 1 North on the Hammanskraal / Boekenhoutskloof off ramp. The 18 500 ha Dinokeng Game Reserve, a public private partnership with Gauteng Provincial Government, was

officially opened on 22 September 2011 with the free roaming Big 5 in over 100 years in Gauteng Province. From your bed or patio you can spot the abundant birdlife in the indigenous garden. Chameleon Bush Lodge is also home to a colony of springhare, who are very active in the early evenings. The Water Tower Chalets consist of 2 units in the water tower and 3 free standing units, sleeping two per unit. Completely self catering, the kitchens fully equipped and also a built-in braais under cover on each patio. You will require nothing but your food and beverage throughout your stay. Luxury bathrooms with bath, shower, basin and toilet; units 3, 4 and 5 boast outdoor showers. The 2 Family Units each have spacious kitchen/dining; 2 en suite bedrooms, each with outdoor shower; undercover patio plus outside fire pit. DStv with Access package. Daily cleaning will ensure that your stay is hassle free and relaxing. Activities such as fine dining, pub meals; guided bush walks, game drives, special drives for birders and photographers are in available in area. Visitors can also book on the Dinokeng Game Reserve Self Drive route, at any of the entrance gates to the game reserve. Our slogan says it all : "The rat race ends here".

Meet the African Jacana.

Small bird. GIANT dad energy. 💛

In the world of the Jacana, it is the father who does absolutely everything. While the female moves on after laying eggs, Dad steps up, incubating the eggs, raising the chicks and protecting his babies from every single threat the African bush throws at him.

But here's the part that will completely undo you. 🥹

When danger approaches, the male Jacana gathers his tiny chicks and tucks them underneath his wings to keep them safe. He then walks on, completely calm, with nothing visible except four tiny sets of little legs dangling below him.

He literally carries his children through danger.

If that's not the most dad thing you've ever heard, we don't know what is. 🤍

Meet the Lizard Buzzard, the bush's most focused, most intense, most unbothered bird of prey. 😤

Does he care about your opinion? Absolutely not.
Does he have places to be and lizards to catch? Absolutely yes.

This medium-sized raptor sits perched high above the bush like he owns the entire landscape, scanning the ground below with laser precision, missing absolutely nothing. 👀

He is the definition of quietly dangerous. 😏

Fun facts about this seriously underrated bird:

🦅 Despite the name, he is not actually a true buzzard — he's more closely related to sparrowhawks and goshawks. He simply doesn't care what you call him 😂
⚡ That distinctive black stripe running down his white throat makes him one of the most elegantly marked raptors in Africa
🦎 Yes — lizards are very much on the menu. Along with insects, small snakes and anything else that dares to move below him
🎵 His call is a distinctive, repetitive whistle that carries beautifully across the bush — once you know it, you'll always recognise it
🌍 He's a year-round resident — no seasonal migration for this guy. He picked his spot and he's staying. Committed. 👏

There is something about witnessing this bond that makes everything else go completely quiet. 🥹

She is fierce and gentle all at once.
She remembers everything.

Ever wondered where the black and white inspiration for our bathrooms came from?

Well, meet the Pied Kingfisher. 🖤🤍

That's right. While most people look to interior design magazines for bathroom inspiration, we looked out the window. And honestly? We think nature got it absolutely right the first time. 😏

The Pied Kingfisher is one of Africa's most striking and recognisable birds — that bold, graphic black and white pattern is so sharp, so perfectly contrasted, it looks less like something that evolved over millions of years and more like something a very talented designer sat down and carefully planned. ✏️

We took notes. 📓

Fun facts about this dapper little diver:

🐦 The Pied Kingfisher can hover, hanging in mid-air above the water before plunging straight down to catch a fish 🐟
🖤 The male has a double black band across his chest. The female only has one — she simply doesn't need to try as hard. 👸😂
💨 He can hover at heights of up to 10 metres — completely motionless against the wind
🌍 He is one of the most widespread kingfisher species in the world
👀 His eyesight is so sharp he can spot a fish underwater while hovering high above the surface

Say hello to the Pearl-spotted Owlet— one of the smallest owls in South Africa and quite possibly the most adorable thing the African bush has ever produced. 🥹

Don't let that tiny face fool you, though. This little guy is a ferocious hunter with absolutely zero fear. He'll take on prey twice his size without blinking those enormous yellow eyes. 👀
Fun facts about this pocket-sized predator:

🦉 He's only about 17cm-20cm tall
👀 Those markings on the back of his head? They look like a second pair of eyes — nature's own security system 😮
🎵 His call is one of the most distinctive sounds of the bush — a series of whistles that build up and up until you can't stop listening
☀️ Unlike most owls, he is actually active during the day — so keep your eyes open!
🐍 Favourite snacks include lizards, insects and small snakes. Ferocious. Absolutely ferocious. 😅
