Oxpeckers and Large Mammals

A little bird with a big role to play! Oxpeckers perch on large mammals such as buffalo, giraffes and rhinos, feeding on ticks and other parasites. Their calls and behaviour can also alert their hosts to potential danger. A small companion with a valuable purpose in the bush.

Zebras and Wildebeest

Two different species, one journey. Zebras and wildebeest are often seen grazing and travelling together across the African plains. With different feeding habits and complementary ways of detecting danger, travelling together can offer benefits to both species.

Out on the African bushveld at Fifty-Five Mjejane, the warthog love story is one of rivalry, resilience and tender beginnings.

January – March | The Rutting Season

The year begins with plenty of drama. Males compete for the attention of receptive females, engaging in tusk-to-tusk battles and pushing matches to establish dominance. It is a season of strength, strategy and securing the opportunity to mate.

March – August | The Waiting Game

Following mating, females carry their piglets for approximately five to six months. During this time, they prepare for one of nature’s most precious moments: the arrival of a new generation.

September – December | Birthing and Rearing Season

As spring arrives, the bushveld welcomes its newest little residents. Female warthogs give birth in sheltered burrows, where their piglets are protected during their vulnerable first weeks. Soon, the young emerge, following their mothers as they learn to forage, explore and navigate their surroundings. Their little tails held high as they trot behind mum are a wonderful sight to behold.

From the clash of tusks to the gentle guidance of a mother, the warthog’s annual cycle reminds us that even in the wildest corners of nature, there is a beautiful balance between competition and care.

As the warmer months arrive at Mjejane, the landscape changes — and with it, the behaviour of the wildlife.

The arrival of rain spreads water across the reserve, allowing animals to move further from the rivers and permanent waterholes. Herds that were once drawn to reliable water sources begin to disperse into the landscape, opening up new territories and creating a greater sense of movement across the reserve.

For many species, this is also a season of new beginnings. The abundance of fresh vegetation coincides with the peak birthing period for much of the wildlife. Young impala, wildebeest and other antelope appear across the plains, bringing an entirely new dynamic to the herds. Mothers become more vigilant, young animals test their surroundings, and predators become increasingly alert to opportunities created by this vulnerability.

The thicker foliage adds another layer to these interactions. With more cover and abundant food, browsers can disappear deeper into the vegetation, while predators use the dense bush to approach unseen. Elephants move through the greener landscape in search of nutritious vegetation, while smaller creatures become increasingly active beneath the canopy.

Heritage in the Kruger Lowveld is found not only in its history, but in the living landscape itself.

Along the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park, the Crocodile River forms part of the natural setting of Mjejane Game Reserve, where wildlife moves freely between Mjejane and the Kruger Park as part of the Greater Kruger landscape.

The area also carries an important human history. The land that became Mjejane was home to the Lugedlane community, who were forcibly removed during the apartheid era. Following the settlement of their land claim, the community chose to develop the land for conservation and ecotourism, creating a model that connects land restitution with wildlife conservation and tourism.

Today, Mjejane reflects both sides of this heritage: a landscape shaped by people and history, and a protected natural environment where the Crocodile River, indigenous bush and wildlife remain central to its character.

Spring migration is arriving in Mjejane.

As the seasons change, the skies above the Mjejane Game Reserve and Greater Kruger region come alive with returning summer migrants. From September through the warmer months, birders can look forward to a remarkable mix of resident species and birds that have travelled thousands of kilometres south for the African summer.

What does it really mean to be one with nature?

At Fifty-Five Mjejane, it means more than waking to the sight of elephants beyond your terrace, listening to the bush come alive at dawn, or watching the last light settle over the river.

This World Vulture Day, we’re raising a glass to one of the bush’s most underrated characters.

Vultures may not have the glamour of a leopard or the elegance of a giraffe, but spend a little time watching them and their charm is hard to resist. They are wonderfully social, occasionally scruffy and gloriously goofy. At dusk, they gather in communal roosts, jostling for the best perch, preening, stretching, squabbling and settling in together as though they’ve arrived for a very exclusive dinner party.

There is, of course, much more to these remarkable birds than their comic personalities.

Vultures are essential to a healthy ecosystem, efficiently clearing carrion and helping to limit the spread of disease. Yet across Africa, many vulture species are endangered, facing threats including poisoning, habitat loss and persecution.
