Tanda Tula

Tanda Tula Intimate, wild, authentic safari camp in the Greater Kruger National Park Our interiors honour South Africa’s Tsonga people, the first custodians of this land.

Newly rearchitected Tanda Tula Safari Camp takes full advantage of its position on the Nhlaralumi River in South Africa’s Timbavati Private Nature Reserve to create intimate guest experiences across the breadth of the camp. We offer nine hybrid canvas and glass suites which open to an endlessly entertaining but incredibly peaceful bushveld setting. Modern luxuries ensure your every need is met. An

d, we’re energy efficient. Solar-powered. Water-wise. The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is part of a connected wildlife area spanning over 2 million hectares. It’s also private conservation land. Which means fewer guests. Fewer vehicles. Less impact on the earth. It also means more intimate and up-close encounters with wildlife. Better conversations around the fire. More attention to your needs and enjoyment.

Two leopards went up this tree. What happened next isn’t supposed to be caught on camera.

Dzindza and a rival female. One territory. Neither willing to back down.

Independently rotating eyes, a grip built for branches, and a tail that coils away when it’s not needed. The flap-necked chameleon is one of those species you could easily drive past, which makes each sighting feel earned. 💚

🪄 Our team have seen a lot out here. Lions before breakfast, elephants at the hide, the whole cast of the Timbavati, really. But, a few dollars turning into a few hundred over morning coffee? That was new. ✨

Thank you The Magic Patio for the finest breakfast entertainment we’ve had in a while. We’re still checking our pockets.

P.s. We did try and convince The Magic Patio to teach us. He politely declined.

The bush is quieter when they’re gone. Then the Sark Breakaway Pride come back through the mist, cubs at heel, settling once more into the Timbavati.

Few things we love more.

Some mornings the bush hands you something it has been holding onto for seventeen years.

Four cheetah cubs, tumbling through the grass on Cheetah Plains. The first cubs recorded in the Timbavati since 2009. We are still grinning about it.

May had plenty more to say for itself: a record rainy season bowing out, mist settling low over the plains, and a fair bit of lion drama we are keeping a close eye on. Chad has written it all down.

POV: You have just found the greatest toy in the bush… and this is definitely the soundtrack playing in your head. 🎵🌿

If you have stayed with us, you already know this sound. You feel it before you place it. A rhythm that drifts through the trees and tells you, without a single word, that it is time to come together.

At Tanda Tula, the drums call us to the table. Not a bell, not an announcement, something older and warmer than that. The sound that means the day is pausing, that hands are reaching for plates, that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

If you know it, you are likely smiling already.

Our beloved Tanda Tula is soon to turn 50. Where have the years gone?

Don and I set out on a journey through our archives to write a piece about this. But somewhere among the old brochures, the papers and the early write-ups, we realised one story could never hold it all. This journey is far richer than that – and we'd like to share these invaluable building blocks with you over the months to come, leading up to our grand celebration. The funny, the embarrassing, the proud, the unforgettable. All of it.

Just look at these vintage photographs, and the marketing language of another era. "Pukka punkah fans turning slowly in the heat. Wall-to-wall wild animals. A ploughman's lunch served in a treehouse. Direct-dial telephones. Guests watching lions feed from 'the truck'."

Oh, how we have laughed! And cried. We've come so far, and learned so much. But through all of it, we have stayed true to ourselves, and to what we were called to do.

This is our living legacy.

Today we begin the series with an introduction, to set the scene. Come and take this walk into the past with us as we head towards 50.

With love, Nina and Don

The Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards are voted for entirely by guests. Every vote is a genuine reflection of lived experience.

At Tanda Tula, we have always believed that it is the unscripted moments that last the longest. The ones you didn't plan for, and couldn't have. The ones you are still thinking about (and feeling), long after returning home.

If Tanda Tula has gifted you this, we would be so grateful for your vote.

Click the link below, search for 'Tanda Tula Safari Camp' and cast your vote. It only takes a minute.
