WATER BABIES... Elephants love water, and not just for drinking as they love bathing in it too! We're now officially in the dry season, which will last until the first rains of spring fall, hopefully around October, so water is currently the most precious resource alongside food. This means you'll see a steady flow of wildlife to every available water source, from the waterhole in front of our pool deck to the various dams around us.

ANOTHER AMAZING SIGHTING... We've been blessed of late with some more fabulous pangolin sightings. As winter takes hold and the nights get chilly, these usually nocturnal mammals tend to risk the daylight hours in search of warmth, foraging for the ants and termites that make up their diet.

WHAT A WHOPPER! This is the rarely seen giant stick insect - a species of phasmid that's endemic to South Africa with a significant presence in the Greater Kruger region. It can grow up to 30cm long (the approximate size of this specimen spotted at Baobab Ridge's entrance) and has exceptional camouflage that mimics twigs! Isn't it amazing?

A TREETOP LARDER... Leopards are renowned for heaving more than twice their bodyweight in carcass into trees. In this case it's an impala and hauling it on high makes it safe from hyenas and most lions, enabling the leopard to feed in relative peace and quiet!

Their dentition is specialised for quick, suffocating bites rather than crushing bones, and their sharp, scissor-like carnassials shear through flesh rapidly allowing them to eat quickly before larger predators arrive.

PAINTED TO PERFECTION... Did you know that the vibrant patterned coats of the painted wolf (African wild dog) are like a fingerprint and absolutely unique to that particular animal? The apt name comes from their latin name - lycaon pictus - and those markings are designed to help pack members recognise one another from up to 100m away, even in long grass!
