Not all great travellers have feathers.

The Belenois aurota, better known as the South African Meadow White or Brown-veined White butterfly, is one of nature’s great travellers.

During peak migration periods, millions can take to the air, creating spectacular moving clouds of butterflies across southern Africa.

Their marbled yellow, white and black wings help them blend into grasses and wildflowers, while their fast, darting flight allows them to cover remarkable distances in search of food and breeding grounds.

A small butterfly with a surprisingly big journey.

Meet one of Thaba’s tiny rockstars: the Southern Rock Agama.

By day, these speedy little reptiles can usually be spotted soaking up the sun on rocks around the hotel or reserve.

But during breeding season… The males arrive dressed for attention with electric blue bodies and fiery orange-red heads, nature’s way of saying “look at me” and “back off” all at once.

Females and younger agamas keep things a little more low-key in earthy camouflage tones, helping them blend perfectly into the landscape.

And those funny little head-bobs? That’s actually their way of communicating. Add in lightning-fast reflexes and a steady appetite for ants, beetles and other insects, and you’ve got a tiny eco-warrior helping keep nature in balance.

Proof that even the smallest residents at Thaba Eco Hotel know how to make an impression.

Did you know Thaba Eco Park is home to not one, but two fascinating tortoise species?

Meet the leopard tortoise, easily recognised by its beautifully patterned, dome-shaped shell — and here’s something you might not expect… it’s the only tortoise that can swim when needed, especially during floods.

Then there’s Speke’s hinged tortoise, with a flatter shell and a clever survival trick. When danger approaches, like a passing fire, it can retreat into underground holes to stay safe.

A small but important reminder when you visit:

If you spot a tortoise crossing the road, give it time and space to get to the other side. Picking it up can cause it to release a protective fluid, which may leave it dehydrated if there’s no nearby water.

Nature has its way — we’re just here to respect it.
