The behaviour of these giraffes may look a bit unusual to the untrained eye, but they are in fact taking part in an important practice, vital for becoming a successful adult.
In order to establish dominance and social hierarchy and ultimately compete for mates, adult giraffes fight each other using a technique called necking, where males swing their heads and necks to strike each other with significant force.
What we have described above is a far more intense version of what is taking place in these pictures. The young giraffes here are practicing the moves in a playful, less aggressive way to help practice the skills and strengthen their necks as they head to maturity.
Have you ever seen this behaviour in the wild?
