Did you know that Thesen Island exists because of timber?

The wood waste from Knysna's old timber industry fuelled the power station our hotel is housed in today.

In our lobby, you'll find a transverse section of an old yellowwood tree, felled at 600 years old (considered middle-aged for a yellowwood), with its growth rings marking centuries of South African history in quiet, concentric circles.

The celebrated South African author Dalene Matthee immortalised the people and forests of this region in Kringe in 'n Bos (1984), a novel so rooted in this place that her ashes were scattered in Krisjan-se-Nek, beneath a 900-year-old yellowwood tree that now stands sentinel over her memorial.

Unsustainable harvesting was halted in Knysna in 1939, and what remains is a privilege to preserve.

Come and find the famous yellowwood in our lobby before visiting its living relatives in the forest.
