Did you know South Africa's oldest working lighthouse stands right here at Cape Agulhas?
Built in 1848 and modelled on the ancient Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it has guided sailors safely around the most treacherous stretch of coastline in the southern hemisphere for over 175 years.
This isn't just a landmark. It's a living piece of history.
The waters around Cape Agulhas have claimed over 250 ships over the centuries, and the lighthouse was the answer to that. Climb to the top and on a clear winter's day, you can see why. The view stretches further than you'd believe possible.
The school holidays are the perfect time to bring the kids here and let history come alive outside of a classroom. Let them stand where explorers once trembled. Let them ask questions the ocean can almost answer.
Some lessons happen in places like this.
