There’s no dramatic announcement when spring arrives at Verlorenkloof. But you begin to notice it.

A little more green across the landscape. New growth along the trails. More birdsong in the mornings. Longer, warmer afternoons and the unmistakable feeling that the kloof is waking up after winter.

Down on the river, the season is changing too. As temperatures begin to rise, insect activity increases and the trout respond to the changing conditions bringing a different pace to the water and a new season for fly fishers to read.

High in the Steenkampsberg, the Crocodile River begins its journey through a landscape where clear mountain water tumbles over rocks and pebbles, fish eagles call across the valley and wild trout still thrive.

Verlorenkloof Estate is privileged to be custodian of approximately 8km of this remarkable upper stretch of the Crocodile River, where wild rainbow and brown trout offer an exceptional fly-fishing experience.

One visiting angler, returning to the river after almost two decades, described it as meeting up with an old friend after many years. What struck him most was how little had changed. Crystal-clear water. Healthy riverbanks. Little evidence of siltation or pollution. And a river quite simply bursting with life.

Verlorenkloof has cared for its private stretch of the Crocodile River since 1999, with careful management helping to protect the quality of the water, the surrounding habitat and the wild trout that call it home.

For the fly fisherman, there is something particularly special about stepping into a river like this. Reading the riffles. Watching the current seams. Catching the flash of a fin beneath the surface. Making that first cast and waiting.

There is something magical about a day spent on the water at Verlorenkloof.

As the first light stretches across the dams, the trout begin to stir. Between 6:00 am and 11:00 am, the water comes alive, and a floating line is often all you need as the morning quietly unfolds around you.

As the sun climbs higher and the day begins to warm, everything slows. It's time to change your approach. Sinking lines, delicate nymph patterns and a patient, slower retrieve often reward those willing to wait. Fly fishing has never been about rushing. It's about reading the water, observing nature and becoming part of its rhythm.

Then comes the evening.

The light softens, the air cools, and tiny mayflies begin to dance across the surface. One by one, trout rise gently to sip them from the water. This is the moment every fly fisher hopes for. A careful cast. A floating line. The finest tippet. A perfectly presented dry fly, perhaps with a tiny midge trailing behind, is often enough to tempt even the most selective trout.

These are the moments that keep anglers returning to Verlorenkloof. Not just for the catch, but for the quiet anticipation, the changing light and the unforgettable feeling of being completely immersed in nature.

Some of the most meaningful things at Verlorenkloof happen quietly.

Each morning, while the farm comes to life and another working day begins, a little stone cottage near our entrance fills with laughter, stories, songs and curious little minds.

Hlokomela, meaning "to take care of or watch over", is so much more than an Early Childhood Development Centre. It is a place where our youngest children are loved, nurtured and encouraged to learn through play, giving their parents the peace of mind to do what they do best across every part of the Verlorenkloof family.

From humble beginnings in the Old Farmhouse with just one teacher, Hlokomela has grown into a beautiful space where milestones are celebrated, languages are embraced, futures are nurtured and a caring community continues to invest in the next generation.

It is a place filled with little hands, big dreams and hearts that remind us every day that taking care of people has always been at the heart of Verlorenkloof.

It might be after an early morning on the river, while the mist still hangs over the mountains. Or after a long walk through the valley, cheeks rosy from the fresh air. Somehow, those moments always seem to lead you to FOODSPACE

The smell of freshly baked bread welcomes you before you even reach the door. The coffee is hot, the cakes are impossible to resist and the shelves are filled with little reminders that life really can be beautifully simple... fresh farm milk, creamy yoghurt and labneh from Verlorenkloof Farm, homemade rusks, preserves, cookies, farm eggs and delicious trout products to take home.

Some guests linger over a slow breakfast or lunch, while others collect a ready-made meal to enjoy later beside the fireplace in their croft, where the only decision left to make is whether to open a bottle of w**e before dinner.
