What makes iSimangaliso so extraordinary? 🌊🌿

The word iSimangaliso means “a miracle” or “something wondrous” in isiZulu, a fitting name for a place where so many worlds meet.

Ancient dune forests give way to wild beaches. Coral reefs lie just offshore. Freshwater lakes, wetlands and coastal forests create a mosaic of habitats supporting everything from nesting sea turtles and migrating humpback whales to hippos, crocodiles and extraordinary birdlife.

In 1999, iSimangaliso became South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional natural beauty, biodiversity and ongoing ecological processes.

And tucked within this remarkable landscape, between the dune forest and Indian Ocean, you’ll find Thonga Beach Lodge.

For us, being a luxury lodge in iSimangaliso Wetland Park means offering our guests the chance to experience this wild corner of KwaZulu-Natal while understanding just how special and significant the landscape around them really is.
