Well… this is not the most flattering angle for this graceful giraffe. 😅

Did you know giraffes have to spread their legs wide and bend down like this to drink because their necks are too short to reach the ground straight on? In this position they are at their most vulnerable, so they drink quickly and stay alert the whole time.

Southern ground hornbills walk slowly through grass like this, hunting on foot. They eat insects, scorpions, snakes, small mammals, tortoises and even other birds. They use that heavy bill to grab prey, shake it hard and often smash it against the ground before swallowing it whole.

Did you know hippos spend most of the day out of the water, not just in it? 🦛

This week, we celebrate an extraordinary milestone…

On 31 May 2026, the legendary Kruger National Park turns 100 years old.

For a century, Kruger has been a sanctuary of wilderness, a place where lions still roar beneath African stars, elephants carve ancient pathways through the bush, and every sunrise carries the promise of something unforgettable.

From its humble beginnings in 1926 to becoming one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations, Kruger’s story is one of vision, conservation, resilience, and wild beauty.
At Needles Lodge, we are privileged to live on its doorstep and witness its magic every single day.

Join us in celebrating 100 years of one of Africa’s greatest treasures. 🐘🦁🌿
