☕✨ The Beautiful Tradition of Afternoon Tea ✨☕
Did you know that the much-loved tradition of Afternoon Tea began in England during the 1840s?
The credit goes to Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford, a close friend and lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. At the time, it was common to eat only two main meals a day – breakfast and a late evening dinner. By late afternoon, the Duchess would often feel hungry, so she began requesting a tray of tea, bread and butter, and small cakes to be brought to her private room.
What started as a simple solution to satisfy her afternoon hunger soon became a social occasion. Anna began inviting friends to join her, and before long, the fashionable ladies of high society were gathering for elegant afternoons of tea, conversation, and delicious treats.
Queen Victoria quickly embraced the tradition, and with the Royal Family’s support, Afternoon Tea became one of Britain’s most cherished customs. It wasn’t long before hotels, country houses, and tearooms across the country adopted the tradition, turning it into the timeless experience we know and love today.
Today, Afternoon Tea is enjoyed all over the world, but its roots remain firmly planted in Victorian England—a tradition born from one Duchess’s simple idea that a cup of tea and a little something sweet could make any afternoon a little more special.
We are proud to continue this wonderful tradition, offering guests the chance to slow down, relax, and enjoy a true taste of history. 🫖🍰
