Creature Feature: The Marvelous Mussel
Living in Mossel Bay, I’ve always loved that our town is named after one of the ocean’s hardest-working little creatures. The humble Brown Mussel (Perna perna) may not be as glamorous as whales or dolphins, but it has helped shape both our coastline and our history.
For tens of thousands of years, early humans living along South Africa’s southern Cape harvested shellfish from these rocky shores. Rich in protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, mussels formed part of a nutritious coastal diet. Many scientists believe that access to these reliable marine food sources contributed to the remarkable development of modern humans right here in what is now celebrated as the Home of Humanity.
Today, these remarkable molluscs continue to work quietly beneath the waves. A single mussel filters litres of seawater every day, removing tiny particles and helping to keep our oceans healthy. When thousands grow together, they create living reefs that provide shelter for countless marine species and help protect our shoreline from the force of the sea.
Yet life for a mussel is anything but easy. Every day they endure pounding waves, scorching sunshine at low tide and hungry predators. Climate change is making their world even tougher, with rising sea temperatures, stronger storms and changing ocean conditions placing increasing pressure on these resilient ecosystem engineers.
Their story reminds us that even the smallest creatures can have an enormous impact.
One of the best ways we can celebrate our marine heritage is by supporting responsibly harvested local seafood. Sustainably farmed mussels are one of the ocean’s most environmentally friendly sources of protein, requiring no feed, no freshwater and leaving a relatively small environmental footprint.
