World renowned for being home to the late Helen Martins’ extraordinary “Owl House”, it has also become a popular retreat for artists, writers or those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Craft shops and galleries, potteries and sculpture gardens are scattered throughout the town, and visitors can also enjoy bushman paintings, fossils, climbing, hiking, bird-watching, mountain-biking, horse-riding, game-viewing, star-gazing or stoep-sitting (yes, it’s a thing in the Karoo).

Directions

From Graaff Reinet

Take the R61/N9 towards Middelburg for 27.2km, then turn left. Continue for 21.7km and turn right into Martin street. Turn right into Hudson street. Destination will be on the left (at the Windmill).

From Middelburg (Eastern Cape)

Take the N10/N9 towards Graaff Reinet for 78.7km. Turn right for 21.7km (this is the 2nd turn off to Nieu Bethesda – the first one is a dirt road). Turn right into Martin street. Turn right into Hudson street. Destination will be on the left (at the Windmill).

Windpomp se geduld

op ń dag stap daar ń man en sy donkie
verby ń eensame windpomp
waar ń vrou in die verte sit en tuur
daar langs die leë sementdam
en donkie vra hoekom sy so sit
en sy sê sy wag en sy bid
vir die blikblom om te draai ... en vir'n kind om te kom
maar donkie sê sy mors haar tyd
dié waggery gaan haar niks in die sak bring
maar sy hou vol dat sy haar kanse sal waag
want geduld ... geduld is ń rare ding
ń ding wat sy en die windpomp
lánkal bemeester het...
en net daar besluit die donkie om saam te wag
maar sy eienaar vra of hy nou heeltemal gek is
dié vrou het nie al haar varkies op hok
maar die donkie sê as jy kan bly glo en hoop
sonder om vir moedeloos jou baas te maak
is al jou varkies presies waar hulle moet wees
wat wou ... hulle staan sommer op aandag in n reguit ry!
en hy d**k dís die tipe werk wat hy
maklik kan baasraak

en so wag die drie...
die vrou vir die kind wat oor nege maande kom
die windpomp vir die wind
en die donkie ... die donkie wag geduldig saam
want windpomp-geduld
is die perfekte werk vir hom
