Somewhere between the peaks and the stars, this week belonged to the night sky.

Dr Derek Fish spent a few evenings with us, talking guests through the planets, the moon, and everything above the Berg once the sun goes down, his solar system model in hand.

There were 3D glasses. There was a Kahoot quiz on the Apollo and Artemis moon missions, and at least one small stargazer who took the leaderboard very seriously indeed.

Up here, the sky gets the kind of dark you don't see in the city. This week, we had someone brilliant to help us make sense of it.

New life doesn't announce itself here. It just arrives.

He was born Thursday, still unsteady on his feet, never straying far from his mom, Firefly.

He doesn't have a name yet. That comes later, once he's proven steady enough to earn one. One of the groomsmen will choose it.

Two more foals are due in the weeks ahead.

Most days here start with a decision. Trail boots, the bird show or perhaps a relaxed morning around the pool. However you choose to explore, breakfast comes first.

Warm croissants, pastries still holding their shape from the oven, jars of blueberry and strawberry jam with the spoons already in. Cured meats and smoked salmon laid out properly, not just placed. Melon, watermelon, mango, a bowl of berries in syrup, whatever's ripe that week.

And if you know, you order the omelette, made to your liking, whatever you pile on from the table.

Rogers has probably already sorted the day's guided hike by the time most guests sit down.

Fuel for wherever the Berg takes you today.

There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over the hotel in the morning.

It's the kind of quiet that's hard to put into words, but Lekkeslaap gave it a shot: a 2025 award for consistently lekke hosting, and a 4.9 out of 5 from the guests who've sat here and felt it too.

Thank you, as always, for showing up, settling in, and telling us about it.

This is what the dark looks like when there's nothing to get in its way.

No streetlights, no glow on the horizon, just the Milky Way, caught in full by guest Jagruthi Naran.

Come see it for yourself. Dr Derek Fish joins us 29 August–5 September for a week of stargazing and sky tours under the Berg.

Our bowling green is next on the list. It's part of the same quiet, ongoing work that's had us upgrading the property this year. One thing at a time, done properly.

The green will be closed from 19 August to 6 September, reopening on Monday, 7 September.

As of Friday, the snow was still up there.

Taken from the top of Dragon's Back, the long ridge that runs to the right of the three large peaks we watch from the hotel. Up on the high ground it was still lying: in the tussock grass, along the buttresses, across the tops.

Same mountains we see every day. A different world, a few hundred metres higher.

Out here, once the sun goes down behind the peaks, the sky takes over.
No streetlights, no glow on the horizon, just the kind of night sky that lets you actually see what's up there.

For eight nights, we're joined by an award-winning science communicator to help us look up properly. Sky tours, stargazing, stories about what's out there, alien encounters in the Central Drakensberg, and so much more. Outdoors when the sky allows it, indoors when it doesn’t.

Book direct with the hotel between 30 Aug–3 Sep and take a further 10% off the Ch*****ne Special rate.

Bookings are open now. Tap here for more info and booking links - https://www.champagnecastle.co.za/astronomy-week-2026

The clouds pulled back this morning and showed us everything.

Ch*****ne Castle, Cathkin, Sterkhorn, all three peaks, all in view, all under fresh snow. It doesn't happen often, and when it does, you stop what you're doing.

Someone else stopped too. A peacock, taking in the view from the veranda railing, in no more of a hurry than the rest of us.
