🌧"There is rain predicted for the weekend, is the train still running?"🌧

One of the most common questions we get when we head into winter is a variation around the weather question.

We take great pleasure in saying, unlike a certain famous green engine who once refused to leave a tunnel for fear of spoiling his paintwork, our train is quite happy to get wet.

We run rain, wind or shine! The train is built for weather, and some of the scenery looks even more beautiful when the outside weather seems angry. The winelands, fields and mountains have a different kind of beauty in the rain, and a wet day on the train is still a full (dry) day out.

Rest assured, though, we won't run when weather makes the lines unsafe. After heavy weather events, Track Inspectors from Transnet inspect the track before our departure, checking for washaways, rockfall, and anything affecting the ballast or drainage. That call sits with the Transnet operations team, not the forecast.

So, if the prediction looks rough, here is what to expect from us. We watch conditions in the days before your trip and inspect the line ahead of every departure. If we ever need to delay, or cancel for safety, we contact you directly.

The train is a perfect winter expedition. ☕Think hot coffee and hot chocolate on the train, 🔥warm roaring fires at Elgin Railway Market, and most of all, friendly staff onboard.
