The question we keep getting asked: “Are you going to be ready for December?”

Our answer? HELL YEAH. We have to! 😂

And we really are doing everything we can to make it happen. Long days, late nights and plenty of hands on deck as we slowly bring this little corner of the island back to life.

We’re so excited to share this space with you again, and even more excited for everything we have planned for the Island Beach Bar this summer.

We also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has stayed with us over the past few months. Your patience, understanding and support while we’ve been finding our feet again have meant more than you know.

There’s still plenty to do, but we’re getting there.

December, we’re coming for you. And we can’t wait to share all the Beach Bar events we have up our sleeves. 🤎

PS this photo was after the flood - a lot has changed since!

FABLES OF STANLEY ISLAND

The Warthogs & the Jack Russells

Many years ago, when our grandparents, Barbara and Lud, were running Stanley Island, Barbara was given two rescued warthog piglets to look after.

At around the same time, there was also a litter of Jack Russell puppies on the island.

Then came a big storm.

The little warthogs had made themselves a burrow to shelter from the weather, and somewhere along the way, the Jack Russell puppies followed them in. Apparently deciding they had found themselves a rather warm and cosy new home, the puppies stayed.

After that, whenever guests came to the island and asked Barbara if they could see the baby warthogs, she would stand outside the burrow and call for them.

Out would come one Jack Russell.

Then another.

Then another…

And finally, the two little warthogs everyone had been waiting for.

For a while, a burrow dug by two rescued warthogs became home to one rather unusual little family.

Warthogs, Jack Russells and another story that could only really have happened on Stanley Island.

Finally starting to see the foundations take shape, which means we can start getting a little creative.

We have plenty of ideas for this space - some a little more ambitious than others, but we’ll see where it takes us.

For now, it’s exciting to see things moving again, and we’re looking forward to welcoming guests back to the restaurant and getting everything ready for our December season.

A little glimpse at what could be… 👀

We’d like to think the zebras are the main attraction, but Seun might disagree.

Somehow, he has a way of finding our guests, making himself completely at home, and convincing everyone that they’re his favourite person.

Many have come to Stanley Island hoping to see the zebras. A surprising number have left with photos of Seun instead. 😂

The Island Beach Bar started with a young couple and an idea.

Swipe → to see how it evolved over the years.

What began as little more than a patch of sand grew year after year, as they kept building, changing, learning and adding a little more each season. Somewhere along the way, they weren’t just building a beach bar - they were creating something that would become part of so many people’s memories.

Over the years, the Beach Bar became the backdrop to countless summer days, long afternoons, cocktails, parties, friendships and memories. Every year, the Island Beach Bar grew a little more with each season leaving its own mark on the space.

Without necessarily knowing it at the time, they had built more than a beach bar. They had built a legacy.

The floods may have changed the landscape once again, but perhaps that is part of the story of this place too. The Island Beach Bar has never really stood still.

So this year, we get to learn from everything that came before us, start with the sand once again, and breathe new life into a space that has already lived many lives.

The next chapter of the Island Beach Bar. Coming soon.

The Keurbooms River is one of Plettenberg Bay’s best kept secrets. 🤎

Spend an afternoon drifting upriver, as the mountains close in around you.

Some of the most beautiful stretches of the Keurbooms can only be reached from the water by boat, canoe or SUP.

No roads. No crowds. Just river, mountains and somewhere new around every bend.

It’s not always sunshine on the island. There’s something about a rainy day here. The river becomes still, the zebras carry on as usual, the restaurant feels a little cosier, and even Seun, our island cat finds his favourite chair.

The sound of rain has a way of reminding us that there’s nowhere we need to rush to.

Some days are made for doing very little.

Same space. Same family. Different generation.

Once the island bar, now our coffee bar - still made for gathering.

And the man behind at the bar in the first photo? That’s our father, who decades later has helped us renovate and build many of the wooden details you see around the island today.

It’s all in the details for us.

The key waiting for you.
Fresh linen.
A quiet corner.
Something gathered from the island.
The little touches you may not notice at first, but that make a place feel considered.

As we’ve been reimagining Stanley Island, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about these smaller moments - keeping things simple, natural and connected to where we are.

Nothing too polished. Nothing too perfect.
