An Italian restaurant, paradoxically called Amsterdam House, opened its doors without much fanfare last month in an obscure spot, off the beaten track (c/o Sealy and Dirk Uys Streets, Bredasdorp). Yet, it serves up fare of the quality I last enjoyed in a dearly beloved Italian friend's kitchen in Trieste.

We’re the guests of Giancarlo Pironi, the chef, and his partner, Sajida Warasally, in the exquisitely decorated restaurant. This is a whole different ball game from what one’s used to. The chef even makes his pasta on one of the tables in the restaurant with customary flair.
