Ranger’s Report | Giant Stick Insect

Sometimes the most fascinating wildlife at Letlapa P**a is the wildlife you almost walk straight past.

The Giant Stick Insect can grow up to an impressive 30 cm long, yet spotting one is surprisingly difficult. Its colouring and shape allow it to blend almost perfectly into branches and twigs, making camouflage one of its greatest defences.
And camouflage isn’t its only clever survival trick.

When threatened, a stick insect can play dead to avoid predators, and some species are even capable of regenerating lost body parts.

Perhaps most fascinating of all is the way some females reproduce. Through a process called parthenogenesis, females can lay unfertilised eggs that can still develop and hatch. This gives stick insects a remarkable advantage when potential mates are few and far between.

This Giant Stick Insect was found right here at Letlapa P**a Game Farm — another reminder that there is always something interesting to discover in the bushveld, if you take the time to look a little closer.

From impala and blesbok to blue wildebeest and nyala, Letlapa P**a is home to a wonderful variety of wildlife that forms part of the landscape and the experience of staying here.
