There are 5 Standard rooms offering different options of a double bed, twin beds, queen sized bed or triple beds. Each room has its own kettle, filter coffee and farm milk. Bedding includes a feather duvet and electric blanket for winter. Bath towels and shower gel are supplied. As these rooms cater for those on a budget, they do not have en-suite bathrooms. There are ablutions with hot showers, toilets and basins, a central shared lounge with log fireplace and a fully equipped guest kitchen with stoves, ovens, fridge, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans. A boma braai area is ideal for outdoor cooking beneath the stars.

Guests seeking en-suite rooms can book Francolin, Kingfisher or Woodpecker rondavels.

For those seeking their own kitchen and lounge as well, guests can choose from the four cottages Guineafowl, Ntsh*tshi, Aloe and Honeyguide.

It all began in 2000 with our love of the Drakensberg mountains, our farm of 30 hectares bordering the Drakensberg Park, and Josie, our first Jersey cow. She mothered many robust calves in her lifetime, and soon our little herd grew, feeding on natural grassveld and being hand milked. The rich, creamy milk was turned into butter and yoghurt for baking and guest breakfasts.

Covid lockdown broke our tourism businesses, but the cows’ milk still needed to be used. A freezer full of butter and the donation of 150 litres of milk per week to the neighbouring community, was not enough to take care of it all. And so began the quest to process it to cream cheese, feta, hard cheeses, halloumi, fruit yoghurts and icecream. As lockdown finally and slowly released its tight grip, our little dairy powerhoused the re-employment of our restaurant staff for several hours per day, and the ladies learned to turn large stainless steel pots of fresh milk into delicious dairy produce. Stromness Farm Cheese is made on site from fresh Jersey cow milk. Available from the Giant’s Cup Cafe. Open daily from 7.30 am to 5 pm.
