Train trip from Winkelspruit to Durban train station very safe onboard and all train stations, clear policing visible. Trains are clean, air-conditioned & voice activated, no vendors or eating allowed onboard.
We've done a few trips with other seniors for the fun of it. There's different options available for making the trip interesting
* Get off at Durban station, walk down to the golden mile via 2 optional routes,
Option 1
Walk past the Durban court which will take you to the sunken gardens, which is also close to mini town. Along route, get your meals from either the Spar Deli, Kentucky or Kara Nichhaโs and enjoy your meals whilst taking in the views of the golden mile. It's + - 2 & half km, takes about + - 35 minutes leisurely walking. Alternatively you can catch a people mover that passes the Durban station every 20 minutes
Option 2
Walk past the cricket stadium to the Durban tourism office. It's + - 3 km, takes about + - 40 minutes leisurely walking. You can hop onboard the Ricksha bus on a + - 3 hour tour of Durban. Seniors pay only R55 per person. If you choose to do the Ricksha bus tour I suggest you take the early morning train, giving you ample time to get back. You can also choose to eat your meals at one of the many restaurants on the golden mile, or if you have time visit the Holocaust museum near the tourism office, entry is free.
Option 3
Walk the same route as above , past the cricket stadium, get onboard the people mover and go spend some time at Ushaka marine world, lots to do there. Get the people mover back to Durban station. Remember this takes a long ride through town before stopping at the Durban station, so plan yourselves well.
If you're choosing to go to Durban by train there are other fun options but all 3 that I've suggested above I have done. Enjoy @
