you've seen it on someone's instagram. your friend mentioned it after their trip. you keep wanting to look into it...

untether on Olive View features six private pods on a farm outside Wellington. just over an hour from Cape Town, completely off-grid, each with its own indoor fireplace, pizza oven, braai and wood-fired hot tub. and it offers the kind of peace that's hard to explain until you've been, and hard to stop talking about after.

the olive trees on the farm are old. like, properly old. the kind that have been here long enough to have their own character, their own shapes, their own particular way of catching the winter light.

they're the reason the farm is called Olive View.

people ask us what "off-grid" actually means at untether. it's something we thought very hard about - here's our answer:

the pods run entirely on solar power - lighting, plug points, the aircon. the geyser and stove run on gas. between the two, the pods are fully self-sufficient without drawing from the municipal grid.

in winter, we encourage guests to use the indoor fireplace for heating, not because the aircon isn't there, but because an open fire in a private pod in the Winelands is a significantly better experience than pressing a button on a remote.

the rest of it (the wood-fired hot tubs, the pizza ovens and braais & the sauna at Hemingway) runs on firewood. which means most of what powers your stay at untether comes from the sun, the earth and a well-stacked pile of wood.

it's a place that was built with intention. we hope you feel that when you're here.

it’s when you alternate between hot and cold conditions - like a sauna and a cold plunge. and with our new sauna at Hemingway, you can give it a try right here on the farm.

enjoy some time heating up in the sauna and then head to the (cold) hot tub for an icy dip. alternating this a few times does all sorts of good things for your body (and your mind!). contrast therapy is said to improve circulation, reduce inflammation and accelerate muscle recovery. plus it feels amazing.

now located in Stellbosch, Snow Mountain was originally established right here in Wellington.

they honour the w**emaking process through traditional methods and natural fermentations and honestly, you can tell.

their Syrah carries layers of black fruit, dark cherries and a hint of spicy pepper on the finish. it’s the perfect red for a wintery weekend on the farm.

there's a specific kind of magic that happens after it rains in the Winelands. the earthy scent of fynbos and wet soil are so grounding. the air has a chill to it that makes you walk faster, breathe deeper, notice more.

the trails around untether after a winter storm are something else entirely. get out there while it still smells like rain.
