There’s a reason you can cover a relatively small distance in the Lower Zambezi and see so much.

The Zambezi Valley sits between two escarpments, and in quick succession the land moves from the river and its network of channels through floodplains, Winterthorn forest and into drier mopane and miombo woodland as you head towards higher ground.

For wildlife, that variety matters. Different habitats mean different food sources, places to rest and access to water throughout the year. Some species spend much of their time close to the river, while others move between these areas as conditions change.

Amanzi occupies just a small corner of this enormous landscape, yet on any given day we can have elephants crossing the channel in front of camp, find the Kulefu Pride further afield or catch Scar moving through the forest. It says a lot about just how much life the Lower Zambezi holds.

A beautiful moment that captures the harmony of Lower Zambezi ✨

The winterthorn tree (Faidherbia albida) is in abundance in the Zambezi valley, and it’s a vital nutrition source for the animals here, especially during the dry season. We often see elephants shaking the trees for pods, which is exactly why you’ll often find impalas and baboons staying in close proximity to them. They hang around right under the trees, knowing that when the elephants shake them, plenty of pods will fall. As witnessed in, you see a whole congregation of animals feasting away together, as if it were high tea!

This sub-adult male found himself separated from the rest of the Kulefu Pride and took up a vantage point on a fallen tree. He called out for the pride but received no response; fortunately, he was reunited with them later.
