Meet Mushiri, the male lion of Lolelunga Private Reserve.

Since his release into the wider reserve, Mushiri has travelled more than 160 km, patrolling and scent-marking his surroundings.

For male lions, these are important territorial behaviours. Scent marks and roars communicate presence to other lions and help establish and maintain territories across large landscapes.

But the return of a lion brings more than another species to the reserve. As an apex predator, Mushiri’s presence can influence how prey species move, where they feed and how they respond to the risk of predation, shaping relationships throughout the ecosystem.

At Lolelunga, we are watching those natural relationships begin to re-emerge.

One lion. A much bigger ecological story.

Meet Miso, the female lion of Lolelunga Private Reserve.

Since her release, she has been exploring the wider reserve alongside Mushiri, and the pair have already successfully hunted for themselves.

Lionesses are generally the primary hunters in a pride, making successful hunting an important part of adapting to life in a free-ranging environment. But predation is about more than the hunt. The presence of lions can change how prey species move and behave, influencing where they feed and how they use the landscape.

These predator-prey interactions are an important part of a functioning ecosystem.

At Lolelunga, Miso and Mushiri are beginning to restore one of those relationships, bringing a top predator back into a landscape where wildlife can once again respond to the presence of predators.

Two lions. A wilderness finding its rhythm.

Our camera traps at Lolelunga caught a brief moment of our cheetah mom and her cubs moving through the reserve. Cheetahs are naturally elusive and constantly on the move. So, even a fleeting glimpse like this is special.

At Lolelunga, the cheetah story continues to unfold.

By August, the wetlands surrounding Lolelunga Private Reserve have dried back significantly, concentrating wildlife on the remaining grasslands and along the Lunga River.

Impalas and zebra gather and predators are never far behind. With each passing season, the reserve continues to reveal the rewards of its ongoing rewilding.
