Sometimes our guests say it better than we ever could.

Stephen and Paula joined us in July, and their words perfectly captured the quieter, more respectful way we choose to experience the wilderness at Nkonzi:

“Nkonzi is really in the wild and it feels very special when you see animals because they are not used to vehicles. You have to work harder to see the animals. The walking safari was brilliant here. It was so peaceful and immersive.

The ethos at Nkonzi was great and Gavin was very clear that they would not leave the road to follow animals, to ensure that we did not stress the animals in any way. They do not stay in contact with other guides whilst out to avoid ‘chasing’ nature around. This resulted in seeing animals going about their days in a natural way, and having very private encounters.” - Stephen and Paula, July 2026

There is no fixed script for a day on safari.

You may leave camp looking for wild dogs and spend the morning watching elephants at the river instead. A planned drive may become an hour with a leopard, or a quiet stretch of road may suddenly fill with the calls of guinea fowl and the movement of a predator nearby.

The plan is simply to follow what the bush gives you.

Nkonzi is small enough for safari to feel personal.

There are no crowds moving through camp and no need for the experience to follow a rigid formula. Days are shaped around the wildlife, the conditions and the people who are here, with time to ask questions, stay longer at a sighting and settle into the rhythm of the valley.

An evening at Nkonzi could look a little like this…

Spotting a pride of lions on the move as you return from your evening drive, before arriving back at camp to find dinner waiting on the riverbed, with lanterns glowing and the night sky overhead.

There is nothing better than hearing that guests felt both cared for and completely immersed in the wilderness. Astrid and Georg visited us in June and this is what they had to say about their trip:

“Above all, Nkonzi was our absolute highlight! It is a true traditional bush camp, and this was the place where we finally found the authentic African bush atmosphere that had been so important to me and that I had been longing to experience again.

The camp is run by Gavin entirely in keeping with its philosophy and was exactly what we had hoped for. Gavin is an outstanding guide, an excellent camp host, and even a wonderful entertainer. We especially enjoyed the walking safaris with him, which were usually conducted with just three or four guests. What made them so special was that he didn’t just explain things on a superficial level. He connected everything, showing how the plants, animals, landscapes and ecosystems relate to one another. He is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable, intelligent and engaging.

One of the most memorable moments was the nighttime visit from a very curious and rather hungry elephant that wandered into the camp. For us, it was a real adventure; for Gavin, it was hard work. Nevertheless, he handled the situation with remarkable calm, professionalism and good judgement.
