Every issue starts with a question...
For our latest issue, the question was simple: "What do travellers really need more of right now?"
The answer wasn't bigger lodges, more activities or busier itineraries…
It was the opposite.
More time.� More space.� More stillness.
So Issue 112 became our exploration of Africa's quieter side, from the emptiness of Botswana's salt pans to the calm rhythms of Zambia's rivers.

If you’ve been following our updates, you already know how excited we were when Ellen came back to her roots and stepped into her role with the Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP). Today, we’re celebrating another incredible chapter in her story as she takes on her role as Project Manager right here on the Mukambi Safaris team!⁠

Having grown up in Kafue National Park since the age of four, Ellen is completely at home in this wild paradise. It is incredibly special to have her leadership, deep knowledge, and lifelong love for this ecosystem guiding our projects. Balancing her camp responsibilities with her part-time conservation work at ZCP, her passion shines through in absolutely every aspect of what she does.⁠

Whether she is working on plans for the vegetable garden, or optimising our data systems, Ellen’s heart is completely woven into the fabric of the Kafue.⁠

If there is one bird that demands your absolute attention in the bush, it is the magnificent Grey Crowned Crane. With their striking golden crests, piercing eyes, and elegant, sweeping wings, they look as though they’ve stepped straight out of a fairytale and right into the Kafue National Park.⁠

But these birds are far more than just a pretty sight—they are a true symbol of the vibrant life thriving across our wetlands and plains. Here’s why we love spotting them:⁠

- The Dance of the Bush: Crowned cranes are famous for their spectacular, rhythmic courtship displays. They bow, jump, run, and throw grass into the air in a breathtaking dance that is an absolute joy to watch on safari.⁠
- Devoted Partners: They are fiercely loyal and mate for life, meaning you’ll almost always spot them moving in devoted, elegant pairs across the grasslands.⁠
- A True Kafue Moment: Whether you are watching them forage in the early morning mist of the Busanga Plains or seeing them silhouetted against a golden Zambian sunset on a evening drive, catching a glimpse of these feathered royals is pure magic.⁠

With over 500 bird species calling our little piece of wilderness home, the Kafue is a paradise for birders and nature lovers alike.⁠
