Yesterday Evening’s Sightings were Phenomenal- This is one of them!

An amazing surprise yesterday evening. As we arrived for sundowners at River Litchi Pan, our pack of wild dogs came bolting out in front of us chasing down an impala.
We were fortunate to watch the kill in front of us!
Needless to say, G&Ts 🍸🍷🍹were momentarily forgotten as we watched this scene unfold before us! Truly Incredible.

Dusk at Fig Tree Pan!

Turn your volume up 🔊 and listen to the sounds of the evening. You can hear a pearl spotted owlet calling, the cheeps of sand grouse coming in for a drink at last light- this is the start of the bush coming alive at night! Pure magic!

Western Banded Snake Eagle 🦅

A Western Banded Snake Eagle came for a drink at camp pan yesterday afternoon. Not often we get to see this raptor up close!

White elephants 🐘🐘 at Camp Pan.

Thursday afternoon brought an unexpected visitor—an elephant mum and her calf—walking right into Camp Pan with a kind of quiet certainty. The timing was instant, the reaction even faster: everyone went still.

And then the detail everyone noticed: that unmistakable white dust covering them. Like they’d travelled through something else entirely before arriving here.

Where do you think was the last place they’d been—wind, dust, or a long stretch of road? 👀

A Feast of Vultures!!

Great to see quite a few vultures rolling in to the lion kill—our biggest star was the lappet-faced vulture! Also on the scene: white-headed, hooded, and white-backed vultures. Nature’s cleanup crew at work 🦅

🦁The Day of the Lion Kill! 🦁

Wednesday morning at Mhara River Camp, the pride made their move—right at the crack of dawn.
The pride numbering 14 in total( all lionesses and cubs) brought down a young buffalo, and when we arrived, something truly unusual was happening.

One of the big lionesses was busy burying the stomach contents under a huge mound of soil—something we’ve never seen before.

The pride was already well-fed, still munching the carcass and head while a devoted lioness kept vultures at bay, chasing them off like it was her full-time job.

All day, the pride stayed close to the kill.

The next day, we returned several times—sure enough, vultures were there, and most of what remained had been picked over…
But that mound of soil?
It was never touched.

And interestingly, we never saw hyenas or jackals either around the remains.

Nature always has surprises—and this one felt like a mystery unfolding right before our eyes. 🐃✨

We’ve had a series of exciting visitors creeping through camp whilst everyone’s been sleeping 🌙🐆

Leopard, genet and a pride of 14 (!!!) lion have been making their way through Mhara under the cover of darkness lately, relaxing by our main area and wandering past all the tents.

We’ve made every effort to set up camp in a way that creates as little disruption to the native flora and fauna as possible, and nothing quite says the animals are “right at home” quite like footage of them calmly exploring camp whilst our guests are safely tucked in their beds 💤

Great excitement at Mhara River camp today when our lionesses pulled down a buffalo 🐃 not far from River Litchi Pan. We counted 14 lions in total all were lionesses and cubs!
