Please excuse the language (we don't know how to 'bleep' a video, and we thought it was appropriate anyway). Great intimate leopard sighting at Camp Hwange with very persistent black-backed jackal harassment.

We've been delighted to have our wild dog pack back at Karangoma for a few days recently. Yes, they terrorised the impala, but we also got to see their new litter of 3 surviving puppies.

There are only an estimated 23 000 lions left in Africa. This is the same number of wolves estimated for Europe, a continent that is only 34% the size of Africa.

It is world lion day today. This male and female were photographed mating on Sunday at Karangoma hopefully doing their bit for population growth.

el Nino is topical currently and it's potential influence on the safari industry bears thinking about. Well ... we thought so anyway.

“We can expect that the lushness of the summer season will give way to the dry season of 2027 earlier than has been the case in 2025 and 2026. This is where we will begin to see the effect of the below-average summer rainfall in a way that is noticeable in a safari or game viewing sense,” Roche said.

“What this means is that the so-called shoulder season of May and June, at the beginning of the usual dry season, and the month of November, at the end of the usual dry season, are going to experience game viewing more akin to the typical peak of July to October.”

AFRICA CLAWLESS OTTER. Yes, we know we are 'shouting', but we are seriously excited by the first sighting of this otter species at Karangoma in the Okavango by Kyle de Nobrega. Wow!

A beautiful end to the week here at Masoala Forest Lodge ... a week where we had our first two humpback whale sightings of the season and where we are now sitting casually around the evening bonfire waiting for the appearance of Masoala sportive lemurs in the trees above.
