There is something uniquely rewarding about experiencing a place on foot: the slower pace, the attention to detail, and the feeling of becoming part of an incredibly rich natural environment; while always remaining a guest.

Ian Batchelor shares a lesson he was once given:

« Many years ago, a great bush mentor told me something I have never forgotten:

´ Stop every day. Even if it’s just for a minute or two. Look at the impala. Enjoy them. Appreciate them for what they are. ´

It’s easy, after years in the bush, to become so focused on the big sightings that we stop noticing the animals we see every single day.

Impala are elegant, alert and remarkably successful, thanks to their own little rituals and adaptations that make them fascinating. Even their grooming is a team effort, with specialised teeth perfectly designed to help remove parasites from those hard-to-reach places.

If you stop seeing the beauty in the impala, you may have stopped really seeing the bush. »

So, next time you’re on safari and a herd of impala is standing quietly in front of you, take a minute.

STOP. LOOK. AND LET THEM IN.

African lion ~ Panthera leo

This curious lioness was photographed by one of our guests during a recent stay at Rhino Safari Camp (thank you Thomas), quietly looking straight at us, perhaps wondering about us as much as we were wondering about her.
A cub watched from further away.

At Rhino, lions are not a rare sight. They move through the concession, we hear their calls, see them, and follow their fresh tracks early in the morning.

The privilege of safari is not simply to see a lion, but to share a moment of its world.

Today, on World Lion Day, we celebrate exactly that, and the wildness that still makes these encounters possible.

Lou is welcoming, brave, calm and patient, always ready with a smile. She has a way of making everyone feel at ease, whether they walk on two legs or four.

Lou is also our Camp Manager.

SHE CAME BACK TO SAY HELLO 🥹

Our first guests at Rhino Camp to spot a Black Rhino had an extraordinary morning.

A beautiful female noticed our vehicle, calmly walked back toward us, and stopped beside us for a curious sniff before quietly continuing on her way.

It lasted only moments, but it will be remembered for a lifetime.

They’re back.
This is why we do what we do.
