With Deepest Sympathy: The Spurwing Island family extends our deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragic Kariba Ferry incident.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones who are grieving, as well as with the passengers, crew, rescuers and everyone in the Kariba community impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.

🐊 MEET SPURWING HARBOUR’S RESIDENT GIANT! 🐊

There’s a rather impressive resident lurking in the waters of Spurwing Harbour — an estimated 14-foot (4.3 m) Nile crocodile!

To put that into perspective, that’s roughly the length of a Volvo boat! At this size, he could potentially be several decades old, with large Nile crocodiles continuing to grow throughout their lives.

And a few facts that make you look at that calm-looking stretch of water a little differently…

🦷 That jaw means business: Nile crocodiles have one of the most powerful bites in the animal kingdom, with large crocodilians capable of exerting thousands of newtons of force.

🍖 They don’t need to eat every day: Crocodiles have a slow metabolism and can go long periods between meals. When they do feed, however, they can consume a substantial amount in one sitting.

🌊 And remember — this is his habitat. A crocodile can be incredibly difficult to spot in the water, even when it is nearby.
