June ‘26 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Stonewell bridge. Our eldest daughter, Ruby, placed her handprint in one of the foundation stones on 2/6/16, when she was not quite 3.

I fabricated and fully assembled the bridge frame in the shed, prior to installation, so it was very heavy to manoeuvre. I was faced with the challenge of how to get it in place over the channel water. So, I made an amphibious pontoon out of used fertiliser drums and sack truck wheels.

Once I lifted it off the truck trailer with the loader, I placed the pontoon on one end of the bridge, picked up the other end with the loader, and simply drove it into the channel, floated it across the water and drove it out the other side onto its foundation. Simple!

10 years on, it still looks great don’t you think?

“From having our morning coffee on the deck overlooking the water and feeding the ducks, to sitting around the fire pit at night enjoying the perfectly paired chocolate fudge and Grand Tawny, we could not fault our three night stay in the Hideaway Cottage. The provisions were delicious and plentiful. Lunch at Fino was excellent. We will definitely return.”

We know the weather has been a bit wet and miserable all week and you are probably wishing for a cocktail and sunshine on a white sandy beach somehere. Reality check...that's not going to happen. Whichever cottage you stay in, you will be surrounded by Australian native vegetation. We have worked hard since 2013 to revegetate all of our non-vineyard areas with Australian natives, all of which are native to our Barossa region.

This morning I’ve been walking the property around the lake pe***ng out self-seeded new natives, to ensure they are not mown over by our grounds workers during winter and spring.

During your stay, you will be amazed how prolific our native bird life is, all thanks to our native planting program. I’ve lost count now, but we’ve planted over 5000. It’s been very rewarding creating a beautiful natural environment, not only for our native fauna, but also for our guests to enjoy!

For six generations, our families have farmed in regional South Australia.
Stonewell became part of that story in 1955, when the first vineyards were planted in this little valley. Stonewell has its own microclimate, its own rhythm, and it has turned out to be a beautiful place to grow premium red wine grapes.
Pfeif and Bell bring together our two family names, Pfeiffer and Gobell. It is a nod to the ancestors who left Germany and England in 1839 and travelled to South Australia with hopes of building a new life.
We often wonder what they would think if they could see it now.
Our Shiraz is rich through the middle, elegant at the finish, and soft in all the right places.
And when you arrive at your cottage, there will be a bottle waiting for you.
