Winter is a wonderful time at Laga Lodge. We normally get snow any time from December to March – sometimes later. When it falls, snow lays like a silent white blanket across the hills, while hoar frosts rime the trees. Streams and rivers start to freeze over, ice sculpts fantastic shapes around rocks and grasses, while along the shoreline the beaches are lined with frozen salty slush that softens the perpetual movement of the waves.

Winter may be cold but it transforms the land and sea, turning your winter-walking, wild-life watching and even wild-water swimming into magical experiences. Then at the end of the day, as the light begins to fade, you can return to the warmth of Laga Lodge to relax, enjoy a hot drink or something stronger, and watch the stars slowing emerge from the darkening skies.

Laga Lodge is the perfect location for BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club dive clubs searching for somewhere new to explore. The lodge is ideal for small groups of scuba divers. It sleeps up to seven people in three separate bedrooms, has a large kitchen, dining and lounge area, and two shower rooms with plenty of hot water. Just as importantly, we’ve a large drying room, laundry, on-site fast-recharge dive air facility, private moorings and pontoons, plus our own dive-boat and workshops.

The loch offers a great choice of dive locations, with amazing marine life, and easy access to wreck sites in the nearby Sound of Mull.

Lage lodge sits at the heart of Laga Bay on Loch Sunart, a truly beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands. The loch was scoured out thousands of years ago during the last ice age, when ice sheets up to a kilometre thick covered most of the central highlands of Scotland. As the ice receded and water levels rose, so the loch and Laga Bay gradually formed.

Interestingly, the weight of ice compressed Scotland downwards. Once that weight was lifted, around 10,000 years ago, the land slowly began to rebound. Although the rate of rebound, or glacio-isostatic depression, has slowed, it continues today, with the central part of Scotland where the ice was thickest rising at around 1-2mm/year. At the same time the southern parts of England are sinking as the entire British landmass pivots, a little like a seesaw with the fulcrum being somewhere in the north of England.

The picture is, however, more complex as some parts of Scotland are rising while others (Shetland, Orkney and the outer Hebrides) are actually sinking.

Perched on a rocky headland, just to the east of Laga Bay is the abandoned Iron Age hill fort of Dun Ghallain. This once would have formed part of a defensive structure and may possibly have been used for longer term habitation. At just 15m x 11m in size, the inner area of the dun was originally surrounded by a drystone wall, traces of which remain today. There was also an outer wall or structure, made from large boulders and rubble, running around the base of the promontory.

At some later stage a small building, measuring about 3m x 2m was added; its foundations are visible and overlay part of the inner wall.

Today, this is a peaceful spot, with the nearby woods now being managed by the Woodland Trust, to improve the native habitat of mature pines and oaks, birches, hazel and alder. There is a small car parking area and track down to the shore, where you get a good view of the dun.
