A fascinating event is being held here this time next year.

The Fallodon Festival will take place on 11/12 September 2027 to raise funds for and awareness of The National Garden Scheme. Millions have been raised for nursing and health charities and the NGS is celebrating its centenary year in 2027.

Fallodon Hall was opened by Sir Edward Grey in 1927, and in the light of his political and naturalist interests, with a hint of history and in recognition of the nursing charity he was originally supporting we have gathered a superb collection of speakers.
Please keep your eye on the NGS website next year to see when tickets will be available.

On the 7th September 1838, a 22-year-old lighthouse keeper’s daughter etched her name into North East legend – and went from living a quiet, isolated existence to becoming one of Victorian Britain's biggest celebrities.

Before that stormy night, Grace lived an incredibly humble life on the remote Farne Islands. Her family shared a single basic room at the bottom of the Longstone Lighthouse, getting by on her father's modest £70-a-year salary (roughly £5,400 in today's money).

Everything changed when the paddle steamer Forfarshire struck the jagged rocks during a ferocious gale. Spotting survivors, Grace and her father, William, took their open wooden coble out into the treacherous, boiling seas. Through sheer bravery, they navigated the massive waves and rescued nine people.

As word spread, the public reaction was unprecedented. Grace became a national heroine overnight. Over a dozen portrait painters sailed out to her remote island just to capture her likeness, and she received hundreds of letters and even marriage proposals. Public donations flooded in, raising over £700 – a life-changing fortune equivalent to around £67,000 today. Even Queen Victoria sent a personal contribution of £50 (worth nearly £5,000 now). Her unexpected wealth and fame were so immense that the Duke of Northumberland stepped in as her guardian to manage the trust fund.

Have you ever visited the Grace Darling Museum in Bamburgh to see her actual rowing boat?

🍬 MEET THE TEAM 🍬

First up in our new Meet the Team series… meet Georgia! or as some of you may know her, “Miss Georgia” 💃

Alnwick bred through and through, Georgia has her own dance school, is a wife and a brilliant mother, and is always serving with a smile in our Alnwick shop. ❤️

Her favourite sweet is Tutti Frutti Tubes, although she’s also quite partial to an aniseed ball, thanks to a little influence from her dad! 😂

If you spot Georgia in store, make sure you say hello! 🍬
