Old Exeter was established in 1130 and has traded for almost 900 years. Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested here on July 19 1603 for treason and taken to the Tower of London. His cousin, Sir Francis Drake was also a regular. We're England's Historic Pie House serving our Home Made Pies and other comfort food every day. Private & Party bookings taken. With a maze of small rooms and corridors, you can enjoy our Bar & Snug, Confessional & Parlour and the Otter Tap Room, our hideaway where you can pour your own pints and play traditional pub games! Joining us was the wonderful Rosemary Griggs, splendidly dressed as Sir Walter Raleigh’s mother and bringing a little Tudor history to life among our old stone walls.

WE’RE HIRING — BAR MANAGER

The Old Exeter Inn | Ashburton, Devon

We’re looking for an experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Bar Manager to join our friendly team at England’s historic pie house.

We’re an independent, beautifully restored pub with almost 900 years of history — and a drinks range that’s entirely our own to choose.

We want someone who genuinely loves what they do. Someone who knows their cask ales and Devon c***rs, gets excited about craft b**rs and independent distilleries, appreciates a good w**e, and takes pride in giving customers a wonderful experience.

Working alongside our Front of House Manager, you’ll take responsibility for the bar, including cellar management, drinks selection, stock control, service standards and leading the team on shift.

You’ll need solid bar management experience, full cellar training, excellent people skills and the confidence to lead by example.

Full-time position, including evenings and weekends.

If you love great drinks, great hospitality and the idea of making your mark on a truly extraordinary historic pub, we’d love to hear from you.

IT’S GOING TO BE A VERY ROYAL CHRISTMAS AT THE OLD EXETER INN!

Christmas is coming… and we’re putting a crown on it!

Introducing our Christmas Crowns: two rather magnificent homemade festive pies, created especially for December.

👑 The King’s Crown - turkey, stuffing and pigs in blankets, wrapped in golden shortcrust pastry and topped with roast turkey.

👑 The Queen’s Crown (v) - honey-roast parsnip, cranberry and red onion in delicate puff pastry.

Both served the Old Exeter way, with buttered swede mash, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, five-day port gravy and, naturally, a Yorkshire pudding crown!

And for pudding? Christmas Pudding with brandy sauce or Yule Log with cream and berries.

Available throughout December alongside our usual menu.

Because if there’s one thing we know about at England’s historic pie house, it’s how to celebrate with a proper pie.
