Went up to the back of the land to check the stream after all this rain — making sure it’s flowing properly and the deer and wildlife have a clean, safe place to drink.

Then I tried to go further up… and found this!

A large tree has completely split and fallen across our access. The video really doesn’t show the size of it — and we can’t get to the back of the land until it’s cleared.

So this job has suddenly moved to the top of the autumn list! 🌳

A lot of cutting, processing and clearing ahead, all while protecting the stream and ensuring we don’t disturb the wildlife that call our valley home. 🦌

Today the little ones ventured further from the coop than ever before — feeling braver, feeling safer, exploring bits of the run they'd never gone near until now. Warm enough for a proper afternoon outside, and their colours keep changing daily too — black deepening, grey silvering, mocha coming through. Uno's especially interesting to watch — he's the same colouring Brave was at this age. Still no idea if we've got boys or girls yet; Brahmas keep you guessing a while longer than most.

There's always a list of jobs waiting on the estate. But days like today are a reminder — the animals come first, work waits. Keeping a flock genuinely healthy and happy takes more than people realise — it's every single day, not just the good weather ones.

Next job on the list: building them a proper coop of our own. The pretty shop-bought ones don't stand up to a real, growing flock — so we're building something that actually works. 🐔🔨

🎃 Halloween at The Woodlands House Estate

Halloween Weekend. Dark skies. Your own private space.

This October half term falls right across the Exmoor Dark Skies Festival, and at The Woodlands House Estate you don’t need to drive to a viewing point when darkness falls.

We’ll decorate the house for Halloween ready for your arrival — pumpkins, autumn touches and a little Halloween atmosphere for the whole family.

Then, when night falls, step outside.

No other holiday lets on site.
No other guests sharing your space.
No neighbouring guest lights across the valley.

Just your family, the dogs, our large enclosed garden, the surrounding woodland and a properly dark North Devon sky.

Wrap up warm around the fire pit, bring out the telescope and see just how many stars you can find. And once the little ones are tucked up in bed, there’s something rather special about sitting outside in the darkness with the valley around you.

🐾 Up to four dogs welcome
🔥 Fire pit
🔭 Telescope & dark-sky experience
🎃 House decorated for Halloween
🌳 Six-acre private valley setting
🏡 Sleeps 7 | One house, one space, all yours

Halloween doesn’t have to mean crowds. Sometimes the dark is the best part.

OVER 50. STILL LEARNING. STILL CLIMBING. 🌳

Can you spot Shelby in the first photo?

He’s up there, somewhere in that enormous tree. We estimate about 30meters

When we came back to The Woodlands House Estate, I don’t think either of us realised quite how many completely new skills looking after six acres would require us to learn.

And we’re learning them in our 50s.

Shelby recently completed his tree climbing and tree surgery training. He’s already felled trees and put plenty of what he learned into practice.

But this one was different.

This was a biggy.

The tree was becoming unhealthy and showing signs of deterioration, so unfortunately it had to come down. But because of where it stood, close to buildings, it couldn’t simply be felled from the ground.

It had to be climbed and carefully dismantled from the top down.

And that’s where doing a course and actually doing the job yourself become two very different things.

On a course, you’ve got instructors around you. Someone to ask. Someone watching. Someone there if you’re uncertain.

Then you come home.

A little time passes.

And eventually you look up at something like THIS and realise that now it’s down to you.

Your training.
Your equipment.
Your judgement.
And one very large tree.

The first photograph really puts it into perspective — see if you can actually find him amongst the branches!

By the later photographs, the crown and top have already been taken down and you can finally see just how high up he actually is.

Watching from the ground, I’ll admit there were a few moments when I thought, Shelby, that’s VERY high! 😂

But there was also a huge amount of pride.

Because this is something I think we should talk about more.

Turning 50 doesn’t mean you stop learning new things.

We’re still taking courses. We’re still learning. We’re still getting things wrong and working things out. And we’re still putting ourselves in situations where we have to trust the new skills we’ve worked hard to learn.

Coming back here and becoming the caretakers of this property has pushed both of us to learn things we never imagined we’d be doing at this stage of our lives.

And perhaps that’s one of the greatest things The Woodlands has given us.

You don’t reach an age where you’ve finished learning what you’re capable of.

Sometimes you just need something big enough to make you find out.

Now I want to hear from the over-50s…

What completely new skill have YOU learned in your 50s, 60s or beyond — or what’s still on your list to learn?

A rare afternoon where I actually get to enjoy what our guests do. 🌿☀️

With the house blocked for electrical works, I sat outside today in the sunshine — birds singing, nature all around, space to breathe… and, of course, my chickens following me everywhere! 🐔😂

Because the house is normally enjoyed by our guests, I rarely get to experience it like this myself.

It reminded me just how special it is to have somewhere you can genuinely switch off, relax and reset.

And you can experience it too. ❤️
