Changeover day. Hot sun. One forgotten gate.

And suddenly I have company. 🐓

Brave, Medusa, Emu, T-Shirt, Lavender, Lemon, Lady and Jaffa — not remotely interested in the beds that need changing or the towels that need folding. Fully committed to the top lawn in the sunshine.

They have five acres to roam. They chose to be next to me.

Beaks open in the heat, so out came the water trays. You do what you do.

To be fair — they were working too. Cleaning up the dropped bird feed before the disinfection stage. Closed loop system in action. Even on changeover day.

That's Emu on the table. She is the smallest one. She chose the table.

And then there's Medusa. Jet black. The hottest one out here by a long way. Did she go and find some shade? No. She came and stood next to my feet and asked for a cuddle.

I may have said yes. 🖤

And this is Brave. He had nothing to do with any of it. He just wanted you to know he exists. 👑

The helpers were eventually escorted back to their field. The house was ready. The guests arrived.

And somewhere out there right now, Brave is surveying his kingdom in the evening sun, completely unbothered.

As he should be. 🌅🐓

This is the job. And honestly? There are worse colleagues. 🌿🥚

🥾 Walk of the Month – Simonsbath to Lynmouth (Two Moors Way 50th Anniversary Walk) 🌿🎉

This June, we’re celebrating 50 years of the Two Moors Way by highlighting one of the most spectacular sections of the entire route — the final stage from Simonsbath to Lynmouth.

Crossing some of Exmoor’s most remote and dramatic landscapes, this unforgettable walk takes you through wild open moorland, past the source of the River Exe, historic Hoar Oak Cottage and along breathtaking valleys before arriving at the sea in Lynmouth. It’s a fitting finale to one of Devon’s most iconic long-distance trails.

🌿 What to expect:
• Vast open moorland across the remote Chains of Exmoor
• The source of the River Exe in Exmoor’s wild heartland
• Historic landmarks including Hoar Oak Cottage
• Stunning views across the East Lyn Valley
• A dramatic descent towards Lynmouth and the North Devon coast
• A true sense of adventure and wilderness

📍 Start: Simonsbath
📍 Finish: Lynmouth
📏 Distance: Approximately 12 miles (19 km)
⛰ Difficulty: Moderate / Challenging
🥾 Trail: Two Moors Way

🎉 2026 marks 50 years of the Two Moors Way, officially opened in 1976 and connecting Dartmoor and Exmoor on one of England’s great long-distance walking routes.

The final section crosses Exmoor’s remotest country before descending through the steep-sided East Lyn Valley, with unforgettable views as the river tumbles towards the sea at Lynmouth.

🐾 Meet Hades 🐾

Many of you know Gary the pheasant, Brittany, Brave and our giant Brahma chickens, but today we’d like to introduce another member of The Woodlands House Estate family.

This is Hades.

Just over a year ago, Hades arrived in North Devon after a remarkable 28-hour journey from Australia when our daughter Georgina decided to return home.

For a little French Bulldog, life changed completely overnight.

Gone were the warm beaches, sunshine, giant cockatoos, biting ants and everything Australia is famous for.

Instead, he arrived at The Woodlands House Estate and stepped into a world of rolling green hills, woodland streams, pheasants, deer, hedgehogs, giant chickens and weather that seemed determined to do all four seasons in a single day.

The thing about Hades is that he doesn’t chase the world.

He studies it.

He watches.

He learns.

And over the last year he’s slowly discovered that North Devon might just be the perfect place for a curious little dog.

🍄 Nature Always Has the Final Say 🍄

Found these incredible fungi whilst clearing brambles around a fallen tree today.

The plan was to tidy the area, but nature had other ideas.

These beautiful bracket fungi are quietly breaking down the timber, returning nutrients to the soil and supporting countless insects and woodland wildlife. So this little corner of The Woodlands House Estate will be staying exactly as it is for now.

A reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is step back and let nature get on with the job.

Have you spotted any interesting fungi this year?
