Don’t forget to visit Lanercost Priory when you stay at cosy, comfortable Wall and Lakes Cottage, on the edge of Brampton 😊

Look closely at these walls and you're not just looking at 850 years of monastic history. You're looking at stolen goods from an even older empire.

Lanercost Priory was founded in 1169, and its builders didn't bother quarrying fresh stone when Hadrian's Wall was sitting right there, already cut and ready to use. Roman inscriptions are still built into the fabric of the place today, silently repurposed by 12th-century canons who clearly weren't precious about provenance.

It didn't buy them an easy life. Sitting this close to the Scottish border meant repeated raids, including one led personally by Robert the Bruce, and a dying King Edward I spent his final months here in 1306-7 before expiring a few miles away, never making it back across into Scotland.
