Just a short drive from Woodlands Park, Painshill is one of the most remarkable landscape gardens in the country, and autumn is a fine time to see it.

Laid out in the 18th century by Charles Hamilton as a kind of living painting, it is full of surprises. A ruined abbey sits on the edge of the Serpentine Lake, vines turn gold on the slopes above the water, and woodland paths lead on to follies, a Crystal Grotto and the newly restored Chinese Bridge.
