Step outside........... and this is what you find.

South Devon in autumn is something else entirely. Wild ponies on the moorland, ancient woodland turning gold along the riverbanks. Waterfalls tucked into the hills that most visitors never know exist.

This part of the world has been quietly extraordinary for a very long time. The locals know it. The guests who discover it in autumn tend not to forget it.

Half term sorted.

It's Dartmouth Food Festival weekend in Dartmouth.

In spite of the weather, this weekend, Dartmouth was coming alive with celebrity chefs, local producers, w**e seminars, and some of the finest food the South West has to offer.

There’s a moment every October when the River Dart exhales.

The summer crowds have gone home and the town slows to its own pace again. Mornings start with mist lifting off the river and boats sitting still on their moorings. You get a table by the window without booking, and the ferry to Kingswear is a two-minute wait rather than twenty.

Afternoons are for walking. The woods along the Dart turn copper and gold, and the coast path out towards the castle has the kind of views you’d usually share with a hundred other people. In October you might get them to yourself.

Then home as the light goes: lamps on, boots off, something warming in a glass, and the river going dark outside the window.
