When we built The Studio in 2021, we followed Scandinavian principles: quality materials, natural light through the skylights, open views out to the Mendip Hills, and a peaceful quiet you can actually hear. The kind of place where you forget to check your phone.

Most self-catering places recirculate the same tired air all weekend. The Studio doesn't.

The door to the terrace is open, and the air moving through the room is the same air moving through the Somerset fields outside. Even when it's closed, a quiet ventilation system keeps drawing fresh air in, gently, continuously. What you breathe inside is genuinely clean.

Add the skylights, that soft overhead light warming the room without a radiator working for it, and something shifts. Shoulders drop. Sleep goes deeper. You wake up clearer without quite knowing why.

Ashley called it "just such a wonderful place." We think the terrace had something to do with it.

From above, you can see the whole scene at once. The wood-fired hot tub steaming gently. The alfresco table set for two. String lights threaded overhead, a chiminea ready for later, and a private garden wrapped around it all.

At around 8am, the skylights do something to this room that no lamp ever could.

The light pours straight down through the roof, catching the grain of the floor, washing across the dark sofa, settling around the pendant like it belongs there. You can't fake this with styling. It only happens because the building was designed to let it in.

This is what Scandinavian design actually means to us. Nothing unnecessary. Everything in its right place. The geometry of the pendant, the warmth of the timber, the quiet weight of the sofa anchoring the room - none of it was added later. It was built this way from the ground up.

We didn't dress The Studio for a photoshoot. We designed it to feel like this every morning, whether anyone's watching or not. You feel it the moment you walk in, and again with your first coffee, when the room is doing all the work and asking nothing of you 🌿

Most guests arrive planning to spend the whole stay in the gorge. We get it. It's spectacular.

But the best moments we hear about over breakfast usually happen elsewhere.

The Strawberry Line, a flat, traffic-free railway path through Somerset hedgerows, starts just down the road. Cave-aged cheese at the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company tastes nothing like the supermarket version, and you can only buy it there. And Root in Wells, fifteen minutes away, holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for a reason — vegetable-led, seasonal, quietly brilliant.

Light does the work, if you let it.

The skylight pulls daylight deep into the rooms, so the lights stay off until dusk. South-facing glass warms the space in winter. Our solar panels make more power than we use, and the surplus quietly powers somewhere else in Somerset while you soak, sleep, and slow down.

Out here in Draycott, just five minutes from Cheddar Gorge, our wood-fired tub climbs to 39°C without touching the grid for heating.

We didn't chase features to make the Studio greener. We stripped things back until only what mattered was left 🌿
