Fungal nails can be incredibly frustrating… 👣

Thickened, discoloured or crumbling nails can cause far more distress and embarrassment than people often realise. Many people hide their feet for years, trying one treatment after another and becoming understandably frustrated when nothing seems to change.

There are lots of topical antifungal treatments available, but there’s an important issue that is sometimes overlooked: the medication has to reach the area where it needs to work.

The nail plate is made predominantly from keratin – a naturally tough, protective barrier. When a fungal nail becomes significantly thickened, simply painting or spraying a treatment onto the surface can make pe*******on difficult.

These photographs show a nail I treated today. By carefully reducing and debriding the thickened, damaged nail, we can remove diseased nail material and create a much better route for a topical antifungal medication to pe*****te the remaining nail and nail bed. This can help give topical treatment the best possible chance of working.

And please don’t feel embarrassed about showing us your nails. I see fungal and damaged nails every day – there is absolutely no judgement. Sometimes just getting that thickened nail reduced can make it look and feel considerably better while treatment gets underway.

A podiatrist is a university-trained healthcare professional with a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry. The title is legally protected and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring high standards of training, safety and ongoing professional development.

Podiatrists are qualified to diagnose and treat complex foot and lower limb conditions, perform nail surgery, manage high-risk patients (including those with diabetes), and assess biomechanics and orthotic needs.

Membership of the Royal College of Podiatry reflects a commitment to clinical excellence, ethical practice and continual learning.

The terms chiropodist and podiatrist refer to the same regulated profession - podiatrist is simply the modern title now used in the UK.

A Foot Health Practitioner (FHP) can also provide valuable routine foot-care services, such as nail cutting and management of uncomplicated corns and callus, but their training and scope of practice are different. FHPs are not HCPC-regulated healthcare professionals, and the level and length of training can vary between practitioners.

Whichever practitioner you choose, it’s always worth checking their qualifications, registration, experience and scope of practice to make sure they’re the right person for your individual foot-care needs. 👣❤️

👣❤️ A quick update on the new gel nail regulations

You may have seen recent reports about changes to gel nail products in the UK. From 15 August 2026, new restrictions have been introduced on TPO, an ingredient previously used in some UV/LED-cured gels.

The good news is that LCN Wilde-Pedique, the professional system we use for toenail reconstruction at Stride Clinic, is TPO-free and compliant with the new requirements. 👣

So there’s no change to our Wilde-Pedique nail reconstruction service, you can continue to book your treatments as normal.

As always, we carefully select professional products with patient safety and current regulations in mind. ❤️👣
