Glorious autumn colours and lichens in Reelig Glen yesterday. There are a number of different habitats within Reelig Glen, the upper part is mixed beech and ash woodlands the lower part with the river and gorge is a perfect habitat for damp loving specialised bryophytes and mosses. The glen is designated a SSSI and is one of our favourite walks. There's a car park at the bottom of the glen where you can enjoy a circular walk up to the folly and back, or a smaller parking area at the top of the glen giving access to the beechwood walks, both areas are linked so you can enjoy a multi habitat walk. , ,

Not the sharpest of photos as they were taken on a mobile phone. We called into Merkinch nature reserve today as we had heard that there's a new kid on the block. The Little Egret was happily pottering around and hanging out with all the herons - I counted 21 herons today! We missed the kingfisher and otters but I think we will head back with the big camera over the next few days. Merkinch Nature reserve is well worth visiting, habitats include marsh, salt estuaries, the Caledonian Canal and the Inner Moray Firth, you never quite know what you're going to see. We tend to park in Clachnaharry Village in Inverness, it gives us a chance to see what's sheltering in the canal before heading over to the reserve. A bonus today was the Royal Scotsman train went through Clachnaharry today too but we were too busy watching the egret to get photos of that. ,

The recent storms have brought some interesting driftwood ashore. This treasure at Nairn Beach is just a bit too big for Hamish to take home.

Yesterday I took Hamish to the 'Secret Beach' it's a great spot, a long sandy beach running along from Whiteness Head to Nairn. A great advantage just now is that due to road works in Nairn the traffic can be dreadfully slow so the 'Secret Beach' gives you a lovely sandy beach with no traffic issues and it's so close to Ardersier. To find it, leave Ardersier on the B9092 and turn off on the single track road to Hilton of Delnies, you drive through the farm yard with the farm house on your left and the farm buildings on your right and continue down the track where you will find parking spaces. Probably best during the week as it was quite busy yesterday, quite a few cars parked although the beach is long so it's never crowded as the photos show. I would have liked to go to the end to look at the rig moored offshore but Hamish is 16 now and I didn't fancy carrying him back if he got tired.

Why now? We always seem to have one hen who decides to go into full moult when it’s getting colder. Poor Blue as I watched her foraging tonight three feathers came loose and blew away, and as for her tail feathers… she’s going to have to cuddle up to the others tonight when they go into the coop.

Yesterday it rained A LOT, however, it is autumn and today was a lovely blue sky day so the obvious thing to do was visit a waterfall. Plodda Falls were fabulous today, lots of water and the autumn colours are coming in. The falls are 40 metres high and there's some great places to view the falls from including a wooden platform that juts out over that 40 metre drop. There's a car park and various walks to be had on waymarked trails, a short one if you just want to view the waterfalls and platforms and some longer walks taking you through a forest with Douglas Fir trees.

I needed to go into Inverness this morning for a meeting, it was such a lovely day that I parked down at Ness Islands and walked into town. The light was just right for the photos of Breac the chainsaw sculpture of a labrador 'looking' at the man fly fishing on the River Ness, it was also highlighting the Cathedral and the castle. On the way back the Fire Brigade River Rescue section were practicing their water retrieval skills in the river and on the islands, it's quite a regular sight, at least they had a good day for it. To top off my walk I treated myself to an ice cream from the crazy golf stall - happy days! , , , www.dolphinview.co

Celebrity Traitors is currently on TV again now, I wonder if they will go up Fyrish Hill again? It's local to their filming castle - Ardross Castle and is one of my favourite walks. At only 6km it has a good path, parking and amazing views on the whole walk. The folly at the top is pretty cool too.
