A little Whitby recommendation from us 🖤

If you’re staying at Rose Cottage, The Quirky Den is definitely worth a visit.

It’s on Grape Lane, right in the middle of Whitby, and I think it has a really similar feel to Rose Cottage, old quirky and full of character.

It’s a proper little pub and somewhere we’d definitely recommend if you fancy somewhere a bit different.

£297 booking. But how much do I actually make from it? 👀

I thought it would be interesting to show the reality behind the booking price, because the amount a guest pays isn’t the amount that goes into the host’s pocket.

For a typical 2-night stay:

Guest pays: £297

Then I have:

£44.55 Booking.com commission
£4.75 bank charges
£65 cleaning & laundry

That leaves £182.70.

And that’s before the mortgage, bills, insurance, maintenance, toiletries, supplies and everything else that comes with running a holiday let!

So when you see a £297 booking, it’s definitely not £297 profit 😂

And this is one of the reasons booking direct is better for both of us. ❤️

Without the booking platform commission, I can charge guests less, while keeping a little more of the booking myself.

So it genuinely works out better for both the guest and the host. ❤️

A little behind the scenes of how we price our stays 👀

This is a 3 bedroom property, with a sofa bed added to one of the rooms, allowing us to accommodate up to 8 guests.

We usually base our starting price around 3 guests, then add a little for each additional guest.

This 2 night stay for 8 guests came to £683, leaving us £560.06 after Airbnb’s host fee.

It’s a pricing model that works really well for us keeping stays attractive for smaller groups while making larger bookings worthwhile too.

1,000 instagram followers. ❤️

A little milestone, and a good excuse to look back at where Central Escapes started.

It all began with the flat above the restaurant. We were planning to rent it out long term until a local estate agent suggested, “Why don’t you try Airbnb?”

I genuinely hadn’t even thought about it. At the time, I thought I’d probably end up staying in the restaurant for the rest of my life.

That one suggestion changed things quite a bit.

Since opening Penthouse 333a in 2023, we’ve opened in Whitby in December 2025, with two more destinations coming soon, Cartmel and Staithes. 🤞

Reaching 1,000 feels pretty good, especially as this isn’t exactly the easiest type of business to grow on Instagram.

What started as an idea has turned into a career, which I definitely didn’t expect when we first put that flat on Airbnb.

Thanks to everyone who follows, books, recommends us or just keeps up with what we’re doing. I really appreciate it! ❤️

We often get asked. “Is it full all the time?! Who actually stays there?!” 👀

Well, the answer is, all sorts of people!

Middlesbrough might not be a traditional tourist hotspot, but there’s so much going on here and plenty of reasons for people to visit.

From its brilliant food and nightlife to football, events, Teesside University and the amazing coastline and countryside right on the doorstep, there’s more to Middlesbrough and Teesside than sometimes gets portrayed.

People have plenty of reasons to come here and they need somewhere lovely to stay when they do. 🤍

You don’t have to be in a tourist hotspot to do well on Airbnb. 🏠
